D'uccle Thread

Could they all be related? Brother/sister matings result in things like this happening. That's not the result of a fatal gene, but of inbreeding.

Otherwise, porcelain genetics should be dandy as long as they aren't paired with lavenders.

If I read your message correctly, there are 3 pairs with no surviving babes? That's not a good sign. I'd bring in fresh blood....
Soooo i was totally in love with the por elain duccles but just had another breeder tell me that out of 3their pairs her friend was unable to keep any porcelain babies alive past one week! Do you all think that there is simething like a re cessive gene linked to color that is killing off a lot of these birds?

I guess my Waffles was an odd ball.. I was REALLY sure she was a HE around 6-7 weeks old.. she was very pink in the face with a fast growing comb. She did feather in really fast though

This was her then

looks like a hen if she was a he the comb would be bigger than that ;)

Well, I am the only grown up with d'uccles, but there are 8 d'uccles in the junior show here in Missouri

Well, they liked my mean porcelain rooster in the first show the best, and my sweet mille rooster the best in the second show. My other porcelain boys weren't well conditioned, one had his foot feathers pecked off the middle toe a few weeks prior, and the other had half his tail feathers broken off when it got slimed by some really yucky mud which dried his tail feathers in a tangle. The judge I talked to said overall, I had good type, but the color needs work (the mille fleur patterning). I had pictures, and then accidentally deleted some of them before they got 'synched' to my computer. I thought they had already been transferred over. I think there are a few on my phone still, but will have to upload later.

I recently discovered my bantam I picked out of the assorted bin is a d'uccle. She is 5 weeks old now and originally lived with her "sisters" until I couldn't resist and brought home 2 more d'uccle chicks and an ISA and Black Australorp. Since Waffles is soooo much smaller than her original flock of 5 weeks I wondered what she'd do with the newborns. Not only did she love them right away, she thinks she is their mama! She was 4 weeks when I put her in with the one day olds. She tucks them under her wings, flaps at the older chicks when they get near "her babies" and makes calling noises when the babies get too far away. Now, I've never had chickens before but isn't that a little crazy that she's so young and so instinctively "mama-ish"? She's so super sweet too. Loves to sleep in your sweatshirt or a little blanket. haha I still put her back with the big girls and I let them all free-range together under supervision. So far the older girls couldn't care less about the babies so I think they'll all be fine when I integrate everyone when it's time to put everyone outside in the coop..

Waffles as a one day old.

Waffles at one week with a one day old EE.

Snuggling with mama @ about 3 weeks old

THis was about 3 min after I put her in with the babies.

The babies are in looooove.

This is a very common scene...Waffles with babies under her wings and one on her back. haha

Can you find the baby d'uccles?

Eeeeeee!!!!! My first D'Uccle hatched last night, the 2nd has pipped. I'm stuck at work all day and am dying to go home and see them. Looks like one mille so far, bit it was pretty dark, we'll have to see him/her once he/she dries. I'll try to get pics soon. I'm pretty happy with my Hova Bator right now!

d'Uccles are usually very good with new chicks. I almost always leave the smallest chick from a batch in the 'newborn' brooder when a new batch hatches, to teach the babies how to find food & water.
But I think Waffles has an ulterior motive; If the stink eye and comb are an indication, Waffles is raising his future flock..... Male d'Uccles can be just as nurturing as the mamas, depending on their personality.
The babies are in looooove.

Hey MaryBeth, I told you on another thread too that I hatched d'Uccles on Thursday! I have 3 Lavs and 2 porcelains. $5 each. If you can't do young chicks, I can raise them for a few weeks, but they will be higher then. Just let me know if you are interested.
