D'uccle Thread

Thanks guys, I really like my mille/mahogany boy too. The cool thing is, a good mille hen I bought at a swap is in love with him so next year they're gonna shack up for a while and we'll see what we get. I bred him to my gold neck hen this year and am waiting for the eggs to hatch. The gold neck was definitely not that into him, it's funny how they have their preferences too. DSFrango, my normal mille and porcelain mix chicks look a lot like yours, but have even MORE black. I'll get some pics up hopefully tonight. The one who has the best personality is missing a toenail of course. Argh. it's always something:)

So, what could you breed him with to get a mahogany?
I will have to research a little. I know that if you cross mille fleur to black you can get brown-red's.

I would probably cross him to a black mottled hen. That would preserve the spangling but bring more black into the gene pool. But I would pick a black mottled with very small spangles so that you didn't get too much white on the offspring.

So when you guys say too much black what do you think this one will be like? I have a brother of his that doesnt have nearly as much black. So Ill prob get rid of this one then:(

Hey, I would like to see what he turns into as well...those eggs came from my flock and I've not seen one with that much black in it until this year...both roos it must be some "throwback" genes somewhere between two of my adults as none of them are colored like that. I really doubt he will keep that black, he should be starting to get spangles on lower back :) How are your others looking?

I have the perfect black mottled hen, too bad she's his full sister:( I'm thinking about showing her because she's probably the best D'Uccle I've got, the problem is, she doesn't have much white mottling at all. I was hoping she would get more after this years molt, but she barely got any, (she's about 1 year old). I just don't want to have the saddest looking D'Uccle in the show.......

I have a young cockerel that has the "Black Beard" thing going on too. I'm going to keep him, because I like the stand out look of the beard!!!

Hi all! I'm wondering if someone could give us some advice?

My daughter has some 8 week old Mille Fleur D'uccles. We discovered weeks ago that the only pullet has a deformed foot - her outside toe is turned under and she walks on it. It wasn't causing problems or an open wound of any sort. Well, now we notice she's limping badly on that foot and often holds it up. Again - I can't see any reason it's causing problems now (besides the obvious!) and have no ideas on how it could be fixed.

What do you think - can she make it? We're going to put her in a small cage with another bantam pullet to keep an eye on her for a few days.

I had a d'Uccle pullet who was born like that. She ended up being my favorite little hen and got along just fine. Personality plus!!! I kept her separate at first to get an idea of her limitations but fairly quickly introduced her to the flock. She got along just fine. I even had my vet examine her to see if there was anything he could do but he said not to worry about it (just don't breed her of course) and keep an eye on her to make sure she wasn't damaging the blood feathers that were semi turned under. I plucked a couple every year after her molt to make her walking a bit more comfortable but I don't think she was ever limited by her deformity. When I would walk into the yard she would come running at her top limpy speed (which was still faster than the other girls) and then fly the rest of the distance to me. Best bird ever.
