Duck attacked by a raccoon

Thanks so much for the help. Most stores are closed right now so I’m trying to make use with what I have. I have some amoxicillin in hand. Could I try giving it some of that?
I only say the tube feeding supplies asap because some people wait days before being willing to try it and they start looking for them then. If the duck does eat on its own, that is certainly the best thing. But the supplies are one thing that is always good to have on hand when you need them.

Amoxicillin would work. You don't necessarily need it. But not everyone has an antibiotic on hand and can take time to get once you realize you need one. I would personally wait on the antibiotic, especially until she has some food in her.

I agree with waiting for the shock to wear off. Think of it like a person who just got attacked in their home...food is probably the last thing on their mind. Clean puncture wounds actually tend to heal very fast, but infection will be your biggest concern. I also agree with the topical antibiotic ointment, a poultry supplement and an oral antibiotic. Flush the wound first with Chlorhexidine, iodine or a saline solution before applying any ointment. Tube feeding supplies are always good to have on hand, however unless his throat neck is injured or there is some other severe injury going on your duck more then likely is simply not eating from shock. However, if he isn't eating at all by tomorrow morning then I would consider tube feeding. If he is starting to eat even just a little by tomorrow I would wait on tube feeding.

How is your little Muscovy this morning @Martrnn ? Hopefully shock is wearing off. While in shock its best to just let it rest, keep warm and have food and water close by but don't force anything. Once shock wears off as long as there aren't serious injuries the duckling should begin to drink and eat. it sure doesn't hurt to give an antibiotic since bite wounds carry alot of bacteria.
Thanks so much for the concern guys. His breathing is much more calm and paced now. However he still has not woken up yet. You can hear him breathing and his eyes open a bit when he sees someone. I will wait a few more hours and keep you guys updated.

Thanks for helping me guys. I haven’t gave the antibiotics yet as I want to see how it will do in a few more hours. Do you know if there is anything I can do while it’s resting? I see some clear liquid coming out of his eyes. What could that be?

It could have been scratched during the attack. Terramycin is the best eye ointment and always seems to do the trick.

Where exactly is the wound? what part of the head? Have you looked all over for any more bites? You could rinse out the eyes with warm saline then pat dry and use the Terramycin eye ointment,

Yes I’ve looked everywhere else for injuries and there is a tiny hole on his head and both of his eyes are injured where only 1 eye remains open. I will give him another bath later and rinse out his eyes. Right now I just need to find a place to buy the ointment.

If you don't have a TSC, the same company for the antibiotic carries terramycin as well.

I have heard of people using bacatracin (Neosporin) but I am not sure if that is actually a good idea. Someone else may know if that will legitimately work in a pinch.

Thanks for the reply. Good news! He got up and walked around a bit. He’s back to sleep now though. Pooed a bit as well. I think I have some leftover neosporin. I’ll give that a shot.

That is great to hear. He sound pretty tuckered out.

I would wait on the Neosporin till someone else confirms it. I am not 100 percent certain about it.
