Duck Egg Candling Photo Diary

Yes, I love when people take candling pictures and show their progression. It can be a helpful tool.

Ayla... the shadow inside the egg could be a duckling. If it takes up most of the egg, it's probably nearing hatching. Watch for movement when you candle. The temp needs to be at 99.5. You can find a lot of useful information on incubating duck eggs online

wow, I have been looking everywhere for these type of pictures! Thank you so much!
I was candling some of my girls eggs, with no avail, one I cracked open as the air sack was floating around in what looked like dark water under the torch, when I cracked it open the house just filled up with this horrible stench!! I was going to throw it in the bushes but I had just washed the dog so that wasn't going to happen...

I posted pictures on another thread and someone said they had nothing in them and a few were bad :( pitty.

So now that I know the 'scovies arn't letting the make near them, I might just take them to my neighbours place for a few days, he has about 3 Pekin males that are wonderuflly matured and very pretty so the girls should get pregnant (pregnant? can ducks get pregnant, well... fertile anyways)...

Anyways, I plan to do what you have done in taking lots of pictures, then when I have a little duck running around my yard I can see how it all started out... I just cannont say how much I love these progression photos! They are amazing! And a wonderful inspiration too!

p.s. the "bad egg" that I mention above way laid by the yellow and brown Khaki in my profile picture... they have grown so much!

How can you tell an internal pip is occuring?
You candle them and if there is a shadow in the air sack and you can hear peeping then it means the duckling has internally pipped! Also if you hear tapping on the egg... I read somewhere that if you tap on the shell very lightly and they tap back then they have internally pipped.

Aweeee. I can't wait!! I have a few more days until lockdown.!!
Good luck!
The babies my 'scovies are sitting on are due in about 2 weeks... last time I candled I could make out a beak, it was opening and closing, like it was practicing breathing, so cute. The other egg I could make out a foot, a skinny little shadow with a big circley-looking-triangle on the end of it, I could only see it when I moved the egg, it would kick around to get to the bottom on the egg. They are taking up about 3 quarters of the egg and are getting bigger everyday.
One of the "New year's" eggs wasn't growing like the others (who had just started their spider veins) so I decided to leave it for a day or 2 and candle it again, next time I candled it still had no spider vein, no heartbeat and had a big red ring around it, I couldn't see any cracks where bacteria could have gotton in, oh well.

When are yours due? Good luck!

Mine are due tomarrow night/next morning. I cant wait!!!!! I am being so impatient!
And that sucks when that happens! I had that happend to my previous try but I didnt know until it was past 28 days and I went into the shells and looked. Such a downer.

Oh wow.
Have they hatched yet? Post pics post pics!!!
What type are they?

I just realised I have a problem with my ducklings, the ducks were broody before they started sitting on fertile eggs so the eggs started growing as soon as I put them under them, so each egg is due a different day, and I'm worried that they will stop sitting to take care of the early-due ducklings and leave the other ones to die... and I don't have a bator :O

Hi
can i just say this post is the best i have seen on the internet, this is my first time hatching Karki Campbell duck eggs, and this post is very interesting with every piece of information you could wish for, i am on day 2 of incubation, one question i have is some people say to incubate duck eggs on there side others with thick end up, can anyone enlighten me on this, my incubator is semi auto and has pre holes in it and the eggs have to be thick end up, just hope i am doing it right
Thanks Gail

I've incubated eggs my whole life since I was a child. But this is my first time soon it with my husband and it's been a few years! Very good reminder, and I bet this is very helpful for those who have never done this! I have 17 duck eggs in there now. First batch is on day 4 and second batch is on day 3. It appears so far that my first batch of 6 have 4 going strong. I'm going to candle them again tonight to be sure.
