Duck shooting- give your opinion

Glad to see so many folks realize that hunters pay for the conservation of animals. There are several places in the US that have such large permenat flocks of geese that they are doing major damage to the environment (and gold...I mean golf courses

) They are trying to find ways to drive them off and such but when they get down to it....they need to be hunted. Unfortunately due to location and such the animals end up being destroyed (euthanized...wasted) There has been some research into using special guns (long barrels) with special loads in special restrictive shooting lanes to allow some hunting in slighty populated areas...not much has come of it...not the most practical means...

Australia is a funny place...one I would love to visit...but funny because rabbits about ruined it! Rabbits! I just don't get it....cats i understand.....tell me....do they still pay folks or have a bounty on feral cats? I remember reading something about that...just curious.

Ducks Unlimited is one of the major wetland conservation groups in the US, because wild ducks need wetlands. It is also a hunting organization.

Personally, I never got duck hunting....get up at the crack of dawn, sit in a cold marsh with a wet dog, and shoot at birds that have a couple of ounces of usable meat on them....my brother and dad did it every year. I even had a friend who was the required retriever in his family, the springer spaniel didn't like cold water!!!!

Honestly, in my opinion, I am against all hunting that has no reason except for maybe "sport", "fun", or some other useless reason. But I am not as against people hunting for a better reason, such as for feeding themselves and their family or to control over-population (such as if there are a lot of deer around and shooting a couple just to keep them controlled). I am also 100% against hunting and killing endangered animals for any reason at all.

I believe that duck hunting really doesn't have any sensible reason...well, except for "sport" or "fun", as I said earlier that I am against, and that's really not a sensible reason. It's a waste of time and has no point but for killing ducks (and lowering their population) just so someone can hold it up and get their picture taken with a big smile on their face because they're so proud of their "prize". I don't see any fun in that. The same goes for deer hunting and stuff. I just don't get the reason why people shoot the deer and then "show it off" with a big grin on their face.

No offense. But it just doesn't make sense to me.

pictures are for memories and sharing stories...folks have been doing that since there were folks. Think cave drawings. For me taking the picture or having a mount on the wall helps preserve that animal's memory and what was going on when that animal was taken. I think of the friends and family that was there and about the other things I saw while hunting.

duck eats good...deer even better...I must admit that the idea of sitting in mud up to my area where mud shouldn't be does not thrill me as much as hugging a tree in a nice breeze early in the morning...so I don't hunt ducks but would give it a go a time or two

I'm an avid hunter (bowhunter, now), but I have never attempted duck hunting. Here in the states, hunting is generally regulated via liscenses, tags, quotas, etc. As others have said, hunters are the main supporters of wildlife resources, financially and then some. Think of all the money advocate groups such as Ducks Unlimited, National Wild Turkey Federation, Phesants Forever, and Whitetails Unlimited (just to name a few) have invested in conservation of our wildlife here in the states.

I don't think I want to consider what would happen if hunting were ever to be outlawed. It is the very essence of mankind...

Isn't Ducks Unlimited an international organization?

Personally, I think duck hunting is a waste of time, money and energy. You can get perfectly good ducks at the meat market that don't taste like fish and are not full of buckshot and pinfeathers.

There is a big difference health-wise between commercially raised duck and duck that has lived on its natural diet. Commercially raised ducks are fed corn and soy which skews the fatty acid profile towards higher omega 6 and lower omega 3. In other words, wild duck is better for you.

Their is a difference between owning ducks and raising domesticated ducks... a family friend of mine had a flock of ducks that they bought and kept, they set it up kinda like zoo.
They are encolsed, can provide themselves and have limited human interaction.. unless they are getting checked up at the vet. It's not exactly the same as complete wild ducks, but they have a similar diet.
Mind you they had a bit of money to burn, not the average person, so that might not be practical

I myself hunt and so does my DH and DD. I have no hard feelings for anyone that is against hunting as long as they are vegetarians. What troubles me most are those who are totally against others going for their own meat but they will go buy steak, burgers or chickens at their local grocery and not think anything about it. Someone had to kill those animals.
I think as long as there is an abundance of any animals, I feel it is OK to hunt them. If the numbers do drop, then yes it should be restricted.
