Hey everyone, first time ducky mummy here!

I've never hatched anything before and have been a panicy mummy this whole time! We have 6 cayuga eggs (which we're unsure if anything is happening with them) and one mallard, which was laid by a wild duck and abandoned so we tried to incubate. She's made it all the way to hatching and even beat her incubating buddies which we put in all at the same time. She made her first external pip at day 27 then a further 2 more pips (think the first wasn't big enough for her) on day 28. We're now day 29 and I woke up to her semi hatched! (Of course, I was so desperate to see the hatch) however, I am a little concerned something is wrong...she's got her head out, and moving around but it looks like she's stuck to the lower half of the egg, it even looks like its dried to some of her fluff. Not only that, but she still has her yolk attached!
Is any of this normal? Are we needing to help? Have I done something wrong?
Sorry for all the questions, im so worried!

P.s. I know we haven't got a hatching mat, we were putting our eggs on lockdown when we got the new incubator and couldn't get a mat.

I would put some coconut oil on the remaining membrane to keep it moist. If possible keep the duckling inside the bottom half of the shell and place into a small cup inside the incubator to allow it to finish absorbing the yolk. You should see it’s mouth moving almost like a yawn while it’s absorbing.
Thats perfect thank you! It keeps yawning and moving its mouth, I thought it was just making noiseless peeps!
Thank you!

When a duckling hatches on its own it zips around the egg and kicks the little cap off
Ducklings will not do this when they have yolk left to absorb
This baby looks like you assisted the hatch way before baby was ready
There is lots of hope for baby to finish absorbing
Put it in a small cup bowl with egg upright I wrap dry paper towel around the egg and baby to keep it from leaning and having neck issues
This yolk will probably take 12 hours or longer it looks really big
As for the second pip that’s normal they make the first one then a second one then wait and wait and wait sometimes a few small hair line cracks then when absorbed and ready they zip
You don’t want that yolk to dry or it can cause problems so make sure the dry paper towel is covering the open egg to keep the air from getting to it
Please remove that turner tray this is not good to have in while hatching
Make sure Humidity is up high Or the baby can get stuck to the shell 65-70 %
Keep us posted and good luck

as citymeetscountry said, try and keep her in the shell, put her into a little cup in the incubator if you can- you can use dry paper towels to support her and keep her comfortable inside the cup.
For the incubator, if you have an old towel you dont really need, you could cut a circle to size and lie that down in the incubator. A grip underfoot is important for newly hatched babies

Hey everyone!
Thank you so much for all your help!
Just to clarify we didn't help her in anyway.

Unfortunately she did pass. Upon further inspection we discovered that it wasn't the yolk, but actually a massive tumor on her leg, the yolk had been absorbed.
She was truly a little rockstar to get as far as she did! We suspect that they were the product of inbreeding as she was wild.

Thank you again for all the help offered!

On a happier note, our cayugas are doing quite well, we think they were just delayed and one has now internally pipped!

P.s. we have now got a hatching mat! ☺️

That does not look like a tumour, did you get any other photos?

Once she had died, my partner took her out to stop bacteria for the others. He opened up the egg and noticed the yolk had been completely absorbed. The tumor/lump was attached to her leg.

I didn't take any more photos as she had died not long after taking these.

Thank you for trying to help
