Earthquake & Tsunami in Japan Thread

Just got word from a very dear childhood friend of mine. She lives in Osaka, Japan. Said she is well but that her boyfriend and 2 friends left Akika to travel to Osaka and she hasn't heard from them at all. She cannot get through on their cell phones. I told her it was likely they are stuck because of the destruction and he will likely call her whenever its possible, that its likely the phones lines and towers may be down too. She is feeling quite sad and said that moral In Osaka seems to be real low, and its much quieter than normal.

I hope whats left of this Tsunami passes through the rest of the countries with minimum if any damage, so we too are praying for Japan and all other countries or areas that might be affected.

I lost my house in Berkeley in the 89 quake and that's one thing I've been thinking about all day. The quiet. You heard sirens non stop, but it was quiet otherwise.
I met more people over the days we had no power in the area. The first night at one of the small markets, we all showed up for more candles and bottled water and anything we could eat that was easy to make and didn't need to be cooked. But it was sooo quiet.

Someone taking pics got washed out to sea here. I couldn't hear if it was Santa Cruz or Crestentline. Why do they do this? They keep emergency personel busy from keeping people safe, by doing exactly what they're told not to and now they have to go out looking for them. Just go ahead and put others in danger cause you don't use your brain. The other two that were with him are safe.

Just heard on the news that a Nor Cal man was swept into the ocean while taking pictures of the Tsunami waves, and the coast guard is currently searching for him... Is a picture really worth you life? And now that picture will probably never be seen, So sad...

My girlfriend said that the eerie sound of the quietness there was making her very uneasy, but that she has lived there long enough to know that they are all in a state of prayer with their families.

I too do not understand why people have a need to flock to the beaches or coasts to see the waves, or capture images, nothing good ever comes from that sort of thing. But I will be honest, I come from a a family where most of my brothers and cousins etc...love to surf, and 2 of my brothers and my one cousin Adrian have on more than one occasion gotten themselves in a sticky situation because they couldn't fight their urge to get on those waves. I guess for them its the thrill, the last time they ventured into something like this my cousin broke his collarbone and leg in three places. Growing up in Spain we got hit with several tropical storms when I was little the first one I remember I was only 4 and I only remember that one because my great-grandfather was at Sea with my stepdad and my grandmother and my mom were crying because they didn't make port when they were supposed to. this was in 1982, both my great-grandfather and step dad were fine, they were forced to dock elsewhere due to the storm, but then we got hit with another one in 83, then 84, then 85. all in the winter months. I remember the one in 84 very well, the storm destroyed all the boats int he shipyard and it was early morning when the power went out and I heard the sounds of rushing water as I woke up. We lived on the foot of a mountain and the heavy rains that come with the storms would bring rocks and heavy erosion off the mountain all down the streets. I was at my aunts that night for a sleepover and she got us up to go back to my grandmothers which was really only 3 streets away but because the lower areas were already flooded she had to take us through a small path that connected the streets at the foot of the mountain(kind of hard to explain what it looked like back then), she didn't have a second floor and my grandmother had a three story stone house. She carried her 2 smallest children on her, while holding on to me and my 3 year old cousin in heavy rain and winds. Now that there is a memory and half. 2 days later the water still hadn't receded and I remember the water came up to my waist. My aunts house was destroyed and she was forced to move elsewhere.

You know what? Cleansing of the gene pool. Some people are too stupid to be allowed to live.

When I left this morning, there were 4 people in the water at Huntington Beach to surf. Morons.

This morning, I saw a bunch of cormorants heading inland. They used to hang around the lake all winter and started going back out to see about a week or two ago. But, today, they were heading back.

That was an awful earthquake! And it even traveled across the ocean to California! Just an hour's drive from where I live
