East RIver - South Dakota

Many feed stores will do special orders. If they do, I would suggest getting either black or red sex-linked chicks. They can be sexed by color and therefore no mistakes. Otherwise I would try and find someone with started pullets. What area are you in? I know a few people in my area that have started Buff Orpingtons and RIR's. Some are easier to tell apart than others but you can get a pretty good idea by about 10 weeks if they are male of female. To be positive you have to wait for hackle & saddle feathers or eggs and that can take as long as 20+ weeks.

Thank you for your reply! I did end up going through a breeder and special ordering chicks. Hopefully all goes well!

Cheers!

I've looked through several of the posts on this site but I'm still stuck in the middle! To insulate or not in SD (Between Huron & Mitchell area). We are getting our building in the next few days so I have to make my decision now! We were planning on insulating and then I started thinking about the fact of mice living in the walls. We have a new pole barn on our property with insulated walls & had a horrible time with mice this year tearing it apart. I do not want that!! I know I will have some but I'd like to prevent it as much as possible, but at the same time I want the birds to be warm enough! I will have a 12X10 building it will be divided out into 3, 4ftx10ft areas with the middle one open for a walkway/storage. This spring I will have more birds (some broilers for a few months) then when winter comes around again we will have around 24 birds.
Would you guys insulate or not?

I have an 8x12 modified garden shed that is not insulated. It was one of those cheap kits you can get at Menards it is just plywood. I got it second hand for free :) I had 5 Large Breed Hens (Brahma & BO) and a Drake in there this last winter (and this very chilly spring) and they all did fine. They stay outside most days regardless of weather. I didn't add any heat just plugged in an electric dog dish so I didn't have to haul water. I live by armour & wagner So it is a little bit warmer but pretty similar. We also have a cat who takes care of our mice but once they are in the insulation they are tough to get rid of....so In my opinion insulation is not necessary that is what their feathers are for. Just make sure you have enough ventilation so it doesn't get humid in the winter.

P.S. just had a batch of kittens if you need rodent control...mom is a great hunter!

Thats what I wanted to hear!! Thank you! We are getting a storage shed type deal too and just cutting the chicken doors in. There are 4 windows in it and 2 little vents and I plan on making some sort of screen door too so we can open it all up when its nice enough!

Believe it or not we have been collecting all the cats we can around here and we still had a problem! We have 6-8 or so wild ones now and hopefully they will have some kittens this spring! Too bad you weren't a little closer I'd take all your kittens!

Hi I (we) am from just south of Avon. Looking at getting some chickens to raise here on our "little slice of heaven". I'm looking for mostly layers (just after the eggs). I'd like a colorful basket of eggs (not just white or brown) and colorful chickens also (think my youngest and grandkids would like them). Anyone have suggestions, all would be helpful?

If you're looking for colorful birds and prolific eggs, here are some suggestions!

White Eggs
- Brown leghorns are beautiful birds, and lay tons of large, white eggs.
-White leghorns are the champion white egg laying breed. Expect almost an egg a day from these girls.
-Exchequer Leghorns are black and white. A more rare color, but will definitely add a touch of spice to the flock!

Blue/green eggs
Easter Eggers/Araucana/Ameraucana lay lots of green, blue or sometimes brownish pink eggs. If you're buying from a hatchery, the birds can be almost any color.

Brown Eggs (All the breeds I've listed are prolific layers of brown eggs, and colorful birds!)
Production Red, Gold Sex Link, Gold Star, Cinnamon Queen etc... All hybrid red chickens that lay like a machine!
Black Sex Links are also a hybrid that lay lots of brown eggs. Very pretty birds too!
Rhode Island Red
Barred Rock
Buff Orpington
Silver Laced Wyandotte
Black Australorp
Speckled Sussex

Dark Brown Eggs (Not quite as amazing layers as the above breeds due to the time it takes to produce a darker egg)
Marans - Black Copper, Cuckoo, Blue Copper, etc...
Welsummer
Barnevelder - My personal favorite! They are very rare, but a few hatcheries do carry them. Their plumage is stunning!

Hope that helps!

I have been debating adding 2 turkeys in with my chick order this year but can't decide. I know growing up we had a turkey or two at some point along with chickens, ducks, geese, pheasants and about every other one you could think of and never had any problems. Now I am hesitant after seeing the "warning" type listing on the McMurry site when you go into the Turkeys about Blackhead. I have never heard of it until now and have grew up with birds my whole life. Is it common around here? Has anyone had a problem with it ?
