I had a lady overhear my DD and I talking in petsmart today and my DD said "mom we need to get home and see how my chicks are doing" she asumed we either had chicks for sale or had bought them for easter. she wanted to know how hard it is to "paint" them colours" and how long she can keep it before she had to get rid of it... my DD was disgusted and piped up and said "my mom will NOT (with her hands on her hips) sell you my babies... they are my pets and how would you like to be painted.? " and with that she walked away... I am soo proud of her...

I am getting my other rabbit the week after easter which is when she'll be ready. The breeder is not selling any rabbits, chicks or other easter animals from March to a week after easter to try and reduce "easter buys". Craigslist is always buzzing with it. The only thing we do around easter is allow people to use chicks when taking easter pictures. We did it last year. Met someone at the photographing spot and taught them how to hold, not squeeze and watched them take pictures. Easiest $10 I ever made

The easter bunny mentality is why I very, very rarely sell my rabbits as pets-and never, never around Easter.

It makes me so upset when people buy live animals for their children, as if they're just toys to be played with and then thrown away.

When I was a child my parents would buy me toy chicks and bunnies for Easter instead of live animals. People really need to do their research before buying an animal, and count on having that animal for its full lifespan. Chicks in particular are so fragile and require special care/diets/etc (preaching to the choir, I know!), so I can't imagine most of those chick stories have a happy ending.

My brother's friend's mother bought a pair of rabbits for her daughter for Easter a few years ago. A few months later, they asked if we wanted some rabbits because they were "too big" and the daughter was scared of them. I declined because I have a ton of animals anyway and assumed she'd find a good home for them. I later found out from my brother that she took the rabbits and released them in the wild, AKA certain death.

I should have just taken the darn rabbits when I got a chance, if I had known she would do something that cruel! I really have no regard for that family in the way they treat their animals. The next thing on their agenda is thinking about breeding their dog. BAD IDEA.

Not all easter animals come to a bad ending. My friend got a chick for easter. But her mom made her research it and write like a book report on its care.. Only after she knew what she was getting into.. She and her mom went and picked out a chick.. Her name was Peepers.. She gave an egg a day.. Had free run of the backyard during the day when they were home. She had the neatest coop.. A very happy chicken that thought she was a dog.. I miss that chicken from my childhood days. Even though she wasnt mine.. I saw her every day..

But yes most easter pets are not so lucky.. But if you are serious about getting a pet. You can find the one you want for real cheap after easter. Some times for free, even with a free cage.. That is how I am going to find my rabbits when the time comes that I have a place to put them..

If I was selling rabbits or chicks around easter. I would drill the people on its care. Like do you know how warm it has to be for the first week of its life.. Or some thing like where are you going to keep the little guy.

This may not be popular to say here, but I do plan on selling during easter next year, the same as the rest of the year. I will always have information sheets to go to each buyer, a min. limit to purchase, and a take back policy. I think part of the problem is when the seller is acting responsibly, not just the buyers being impulsive. I won't all my animals to go to good home and if someone decides they aren't willing to care for their animal properly then I have no problem with them returning it. Anyone have any other tips on making sure I'm a responsible seller?
