OK....too early birds that where due to hatch tomorrow...Lav. Orps. I think these will be splits. Could not get away from the glare. Now that I am excited about the hatching it looks like I will lie awake thinking...."maybe another one has started!"

How cute are they???? We are still waiting to sell our house. As soon as we do, we are headed to the Tri-City area...Johnson City, more or less. Is there anyone there That feels up to mentoring an newbie to chickens once we get there?

i had another chick make it, but it wasnt a rhode island red like the guey who gave it to me said it was, it has fully feathered legs and toes, and grenish legs under that i think, with game chick or americana look. odd as i thought i saw the two hens he poiunted to that had laid these eggs, were one old fashioned rhode islAND AND ONE new kind. might have been an americana roo in with them... but the chick looks to be a bantam, probly only reason it lived in huge egg and hatched perfect early on own.

ANYONE KNOW WHY MY CHICKS ARE DEVELOPING BUT WOULD BE DYING IN EGGS RIGHT AROUND HATCH, BEING ALL IN WRONG DIRECTION AND DROUGHNDING MAYBE IN YOLK SACS??? they are all fine and active a week ago, but suddenly they all stopped moving. i had one i tried helping as it started trying to pip the bottom side or wrong end, and it died shortly after a helped it out, but seemed fine before died. could they be developing to quick or something else along those lines, as non except two had actually piped the air cell even or were even in a position to be able to, but just mashed up with seemingly no air cell even.

What about your humidity?? I keep mine around 30-35 the first 18 days. Then raise it to around 55-60 for hatching. I have found a very good way to do my eggs when they are going into lock down. I take the paper egg cartons and cut part of the bottom out and then all around the sides. It leaves a skeleton that I sit the eggs in at an angle. It keeps chicks from rolling the eggs around and gives the hatching chick some stability. When you go into lock down and candle them then....do you see the chicks moving around? You have to make sure the air sac at the top is not too big or too small. Usually if the bottom if it from shell to membrane is near an inch in large eggs is good. You can tell just by looking if it is too small or big.

The chick with feathered legs....Americanas (or mine are) have clean legs..could it have some Maran in it? Or....Cochin? If it is bantam size silkies and frizzle have feathered legs. How many toes does it have? I am still new to some of the different breeds.

Sorry..forgot to update on my hatching. I have so far 5 Lavender and 5 black split Orps.

There was one that honestly looked like it already had a comb!! Still have 3 more eggs to go. It always makes me nervous when hatching all at once stops with a couple left..wondering how long to I wait. All eggs had chicks rolling around at LD....but technically...I LD at 10PM so the 21st officially starts in 30 minutes. Hopefully these are just lazy and will pip soon.

didnt even think to count toes (see how green to this i am still, and im not even sure if i recall why im counting toes on this silkie looking powder puff)! humidity is probly still at fifty as room used to stay that when was reptile room, but air cells are normal size, they all develope fine till last week when i stopped candling and something went wrong... could it have been the dutch bantam eggs that were bad? i kept them on opposite side of bator, and in egg cups of plastic, but was some yellow od stuff around just them in bator bottom. could it have made my eggs, kept at about a hundred degrees, go bad in those last days, as some seemed to hatch and do fine. the chick has a normal number of toes.
