Ducks decided they would "weed" the flower bed...at least that's what I'll keep saying until all the flowers have been eaten.

Grawg...not everyone can get their ducks to pose in a beautiful flower garden...you are talented dear.

OK...... I have gotta vent and only my chicken friends here will understand. I went with my dad to the local flea market today. Came up on a young couple with chickens for sale. I could have cried. He had a beautiful Aracauna roo and some other equally nice ones...one of which I was interested in. The one that interested me did not have a feather on his bottom and it looked like it had been rubbed with sand paper. It was caged with ducks who where pecking continuosly on it's bottom. I am sure it must have also been eat up with lice. If it had looked healthy I would have given twice what he was asking. The Aracauna.....among 4-5 others where freshly dubbed and he was trying to sell them as game fowl. I did not know what to say...or well...I was afraid of what I would say. I was faced with A. Asking why he did this to his chickens and why bring them to sell to those who did not know any better to buy what he had....or 2. Walk away biting my tongue. I choose 2. But I feel so bad in not saying something. But I do think the few questions I did nicely put to him made a point. By the time we got to the last row...there where all the roosters..he had sold them as a group to a man. I have the young man's phone number...I ask for it to call later. I would still be interested in the roo IF he could guarantee it was pest free. I did not want to ask in front of other people and cause a possible "scene". So...should I confront him on the phone or just leave sleeping dogs lie??

It has been one sucky day....I have to take my sons cat to be put to sleep in the morning....he had his teeth cleaned last week and something really went wrong. It is so sad and I feel so bad for my son. This year has GOT to start looking up.
Everyone have a good week!

I'm sorry TNBarnQueen!! So sorry for your sons kitty that's awful!

I come across that quite a bit at my flea market. Most of the poultry vendors there get their stock from other people that sell them them cheap and in a big lot. They cram them into tiny cages until they take them to market. It breaks my heart when I go too, but I do the same thing as you did and walk away (most of the time, because I remind myself how long I have to QT chickens. I do have soft spot for debeaked hens). Chickens are livestock to most people around here and $$ is king, not animal husbandry. People suck.

Oh no! My dog, Snap has an appointment Tuesday for a teeth cleaning! Is there some questions I should be asking so that it doesn't happen to him?

I'm sorry you had such a sucky day. I would have done the same thing. It's terrible, but you can't risk the birds you have at home to save them. Your first responsibility is to them.

Somebody must have used the b-word on here. Bob's daughter walked around all day puffed up and she was GROUCHY. She was eating and wasn't pale and looked fine otherwise and I was about to post on here to see if anyone could diagnose her. When I went to lock them up tonight she was on the nest, growling. Sigh. At least it's a good time of year. I gave her five orp eggs and a wheaten ameraucana egg. We'll see how she does since she's not even a year old. I would have thought that being half brahma would make the girls less b-wordy!!!

Grawg, I am not a duck person, but those cuties might just change my mind...

Ok sorry it took so long, but had more chaos, heartbreak and madness going on, but here are pic of cages, bun and the chicks that I'm selling and giving away. If my vet decides he doesn't want the big coop and the oeg bantams I will post them too.
TNBarnQueen I am so sorry to hear about the kitty :-( This year has tested everyone so far, but I think it is not all bad, it is just a time of change and everyone is having a hard time just holding on to this bumpy ride. My 18 year old dog will make her last trip to the vet in the next few weeks too, but at least we get to make the decision, it is not easy, but we don't have to rush and get to take our time saying goodbye. And the wonderful thing is even though we may lose one special one and even though they can never be replaced, maybe months down the road there will be room for another kitty or doggie that may otherwise been put to sleep in a shelter if it hadn't found a home.

Actually an indoor cage, but has been stored outside due to space issues.

This is the the small hutch that Sharpie lives in right now, in lovely blaze orange. Very light, I can stand under it and lift it up to move it(recommended without rabbit inside or you may get coco puffs on you)

This is Sharpie herself, being a halloween rabbit(wrong season!!!). She is a mini rex, white with dark grey or black lines all over, looks like someone marked on her with a sharpie, hence the name. She was given to me as a freebee because she had very bad infected sore hocks, but has gotten a lot better already after living as an inside bun for a few months, though the fur on her feet is still thin and they do get irritated sometimes.

Here is the little buff brahma bantam chick(or at least that was the guess of the breed). Very cute and shy, with huge fluffy feet.

And the 3 sizzles. The oldest one is black, but the other 2 just keep changing from week to week, not sure, because even the darker one has lighter patches that the older one didn't have at that age, so blue and/or splash maybe?

@Tnbarnqueen, if your talking about the same flea market im thinking about most those guys get those poor birds from the auction on saturday night and take them there to try and sale them higher priced. Some even will still have the tags on the coops from the sale, at last nights sale alot of the birds were in poor condition, most hens were missing feathers but some roos were worse, they tried to sale a polish as a game before too but hopefully no one actually believed that poor thing was a game roo. very sorry to hear about your cat.

There are all kinds of anesthesia.....ask them to use one that does not require your dog to have to metabolize the anesthesia. I think that is what happened to Toby after I talked to my friend was a vet tech. With his age that is what they should have done and as a result it has caused his kidneys to shut down. My regular vet is in the hospital and his vet tech told me Fri. that it is not looking good. He is a very good hearted person...he keeps his prices down very low cause people in his area do not have much money to spare. SO...he does low cost spay and neutering 2 days a week. It is not really a money thing for him..it is making sure he can get as many cats and dogs taken care of as possible. I don't know what I will do if he cannot return to his practice.

+Oh Daphne....give me a call one day when you can. I had my phone in my back pocket and I don't know how it unlocked but...my butt erased all my contacts.

The one good thing is I take some of my chickens there to sale when I am doing test hatching. In fact I will be there the day before Easter to sale extras. Maybe some of them will see what nice happy and healthy chickens should look like. Most times I sell out. And as any other time I talk to who is buying to make sure they are going to good homes. I would say the auction is in fact where those came from cause they where all different breeds and only 1 or 2 alike. Really sad.
