Ebay egg advice please?

I don't know how many birds the seller has, but they must be doing pretty good at laying, because they have 2-3 auctions on all the time!

Ideal poultry sells both Large and bantam Sultans.

I did go out and check in the bubble wrap at the bottom of the box to see if there was a goose egg, but no! Oh well!

I take issue with this statement.

Many BYCers, including me, sell on ebay. I sell a quality bird, with a very special diet that costs me, as it produces a very healthy chick. I sometimes end up with auctions that go cheap, but it doesn't mean it's a crappy bird. I think my stock is better quality than many reputable hatcheries (that's an understatement, but I don't like to belittle hatcheries as they have their purpose). I think maybe you just don't realize there are folks out there that do sell good things on ebay.

I bought 15 serama eggs on ebay and only 5 hatched and 1 of them died the next day.........I will never go the ebay way again.....just post on backyard chickens there is always somebody that will have eggs for you!!!!!!!

I had a bad experience from a BYC seller. However, I know that there are many caring sellers on BYC that work very hard to provide the best goods and services possible.

I do not believe that one site is all bad and another all good. You will find all kinds of people selling their goods on the many different internet sites. It is harsh to judge all sellers on a particular site based on 1 bad experience. You could be missing the chance of finding the one seller with the totally awesome birds and excellent service you have been looking for.

That said this is a 2 way street as there are good and bad buyers too. This is just part of the experience / risk that one takes buying goods via the internet.

One thing I would suggest is making a list of the bad sellers / buyers that you know for sure you do not want to bother with again and move on. I hope the OP has a very good hatch and whether he decides to keep the chicks or not has a happy ending.

I understand Seramas are extremely difficult to hatch, so actually I think you did very well.

I purchased 13 eggs about 10days ago. There are 15 eggs shipped and 1 broke. I did candle them and 5-6 are developing. I would buy again in the future if quality stock is good and the hen & rooster ratio is 6/1 or less. My recommend is buying 12 or more eggs. There is better chance you get several chicks, which enough to build your own stock. Just remember... there is a chance none hatch.

x2 Thats a low-average hatch rate for shipped eggs, and they were Serama's which are hard to hatch

X3- Seramas are very difficult to hatch with shipped eggs. I'd have been happy with that ratio!

In general, newer hatchers don't understand that the hatchability of an egg depends on a bunch of factors. I encourage buyers to look at the feedback, and look at the info presented by the sellers. My auctions are likely annoyingly wordy, but I feel strongly about making my case regarding the way I ship, the way I feed, the quality of my stock, and the way I breed. I want that info to be available to lookers, and if they pass me by, that's fine.

ASK about what they feed. If it's 16% layer feed, without them offering info about any supplementation, the chances of damage in shipping are greater than if they offer their birds nutritional supplementation and fat/protein treats (insects, eggs, meat, fish, etc.)

If you don't ask, you take the risk of poor hatches because you don't know. If you ask, they should be happy to share the answers. If they're offended you asked, they likely wouldn't have had a product you would be happy with, anyway.

It's too diverse a group out there to discount an entire population just because they do business on ebay- many of us sell in multiple auctions because it's how we supplement or earn our income. It's business. That's a big venue. It doesn't make us shady any more than selling here does. Not everyone knows about BYC.

I definitely have been delighted to see some BYCers on ebay, because I managed to get eggs a bit less from someone I'd missed auctions from previously- it's just a different store, selling the same brand name, really.

My biggest issue is fertilized egg. I know 10/1 (hen/rooster) ratio is adequate if the rooster is active mating, but most case isn't.
