Eggs damaged in transit - patched up and fingers crossed! *Photos p5*

I have a broody that at about day 10 one of her eggs got cracked kind of like the picture of yours that you put wax on. I waxed that one and Sept 12th I hatched a barred rock/NN out of that. we are calling her Crack.

Oh goodness they were a bit of a mess, weren't they? Looks like your friend needs lessons from you on how to ship eggs

Best of luck with them.

I've tried gently hinting a few times on some of the other forums (fora?) I hang out on that individual bubblewrapping and twin-skin packaging with additional cushioning is really the best way to go, but most people seem strangely attached to their poly boxes. I hate HATE HATE those things. But this time round I think perhaps even poly boxes were in short supply! Anyway, he's a lovely chap and he's sending me the eggs completely free; won't even accept payment for his postage costs, so it would be extremely churlish of me to grumble. Two of these eggs are Buff Daisies! I'm so so hoping they make it to hatch...

Oh well, here goes the grand candle wax experiment. I've weighed everyone and I'll be interested to see if the eggs with most wax will lose weight more slowly. I expect they will. I'd expect that they'll have a worse rate of oxygen exchange too due to the amount of the surface of the egg that's sealed.

Good luck! I hope you are pleasantly surprised and have a great hatch!

I agree, but what is a poly box? I'm not familiar with those.

Behold the Poly Box, trusty packing boxes for most of Britain's egg shippers:

Holes to sit the eggs in, if the eggs are small and rattling around wrap them in some toilet paper, close the two halves and tape shut.

Quick, easy and you almost never get a broken egg in them. Unfortunately you do get a lot that are super scrambled internally...

Ah ha, Maybe that is one of the reasons my shipped eggs have a low hatch rate. Now what is twin-skin packaging?

Edited: not my eggs but ones I have bought

Twin-skin is just my name for it. LOL! It's just two boxes with a good layer of cushioning in between.

Here's how I pack my eggs for shipping:

1. Bubble wrap each egg individually, in at least two layers of wrap and sellotaped securely.
2. Line a small box with more bubblewrap and pack the wrapped eggs in tightly.
3. Put more bubblewrap in any spaces and a layer on the top before you put the lid on the box.
4. Tape box tightly shut.

The idea here is that the eggs are packed in fairly tight with no room for rattling around. It's best if you use a very strong box. I like the strong 2 litre plastic ice cream cartons but a wooden box would be even better. Something that you'd almost be happy to send the eggs through the post in without any further packaging. This bit of the packaging protects the eggs from being broken.

5. Get a big box, a cardboard one will do, tape it up securely and line it with (ideally) straw
6. Put the small box in the middle of the big box and pack all round with more straw.
7. NOW you're ready to send it!

The idea with the straw (or polystyrene packing peanuts, or shredded paper, or crunched up balls of newspaper) is to minimise jarring. It's this part of the packaging that (hopefully) will stop your eggs being scrambled if the box is tossed around or dropped. Looking at my much hated poly boxes, I think I'd be happy using them inside a bigger box. I just don't like them much used on their own...

Now this is something I would pay extra for as it would end up being less expensive paying for great packaging the first time than to keep buying eggs that will never hatch. This last hatch I only ended up with one chick out of 18 eggs.

Wow, that's the first time I've ever seen one of those. Does seem like it would be less time consuming, but I definitely like your shipping method better
