Emergency Medical Kit

Do you keep a medical kit for emergencies during hatching? If so what do you have in it and why. Thank you
Hi @waddlehead :frow Welcome To BYC

Interesting question!
I keep basic supplies to treat minor injuries and conditions for my flock.

For hatching, hopefully there is no emergency. The only thing I can think of is if you had to do an assisted hatch - of course the the very last resort.

As described in the article below, having something on hand like Bacitracin, Triple Antibiotic ointment or Coconut oil would be good to use to keep the membrane moist. Coconut oil is a staple in most kitchens and triple antibiotic ointment/Bacitracin are often found in most household first aid kits or in your chicken kit.

Other supplies that may come in handy would be Coban/Vetwrap this can be used to treat splay/spraddle leg after hatch.

A good poultry vitamin is always something to keep on hand. Poultry Nutri-Drench or Poultry Cell are 2 that I use.

I don't know if you've seen this, but it's a very good article on assisted hatch https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/guide-to-assisted-hatching-for-all-poultry.72886/

Good information on treating splay/spraddle leg https://the-chicken-chick.com/spraddle-leg-in-baby-chicks-what-is-it/

Good Luck!
