Hello. A month ago, I purchased a batch of unsexed silkie chicks, and three died, two of unknown causes (not eating not drinking), one from a different issue.
About a week and a half ago, the weather in our area increased in temperature dramatically and suddenly. Out of our 12 remaining chicks, 4 died, despite my efforts to save them, because of heat exhaustion, most likely.
My family and I were immensely depressed, but were slightly, and I mean slightly, relieved that at least 8 survived.
One day after the heat wave, we noticed our blue silkie chick with its head sideways. Upon further inspection, the neck was twisted slightly, so that the head was not properly set. About three minutes later, the issue disappeared. We thought that was the end of it. However, about four days later, the same problem happened, only this time, the head was so twisted, that it looked like the head was on backwards. I kid you not, it was a gruesome sight. Several minutes later, the issue was resolved.
The next day, it happened once more. We searched it up, and thought perhaps it's wry neck. We bought some Poly-vi-sol, in case it was a vitamin deficiency, and added it to the water every day. It seemed to lessen, then disappear, so we moved on, still adding the Poly-vi-sol to the water once a while.
Today, it happened again, and it was bad. It curled up, cheeping loudly, struggling to right itself. We
I suspected it was neurological, gave some Vitamin E, and after ten minutes, the head was righted and it seemed fine.
What is this? It doesn't seem like wry neck, since it's not constant and is more random. What can I do? Could the heat wave have caused some damage?
Thanks.

I'm sorry you are having trouble:hugs

From your description, it does sound neurological. Wry Neck is a symptom of Vitamin E deficiency, head injury/trauma and certain diseases (like Marek's, Mareks, Avian Lymphoid Leukosis, Newcastles, etc.).

Since you are seeing improvement with Vitamin E, then it could be from Vitamin E deficiency.

If she were mine, I would give Vitamin E 400IU daily, along with egg or tuna to provide Selenium (Selenium helps with the uptake of E). I would also add B vitamins to the feed - you can crush a human B-Complex vitamin and add it to the feed daily.

Alternatively you could follow the treatment plan in the link below. Some do recommend using Prednisone along with vitamin therapy. You would need to source this through your vet.

Can anyone advise on the SIZE of the 1/4 B vitamin? The ones I have are Jamieson B100 complex- 10 mg of B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, with biotin, folate, choline, and inisitol. They are big- I'm doubting what to dose...

Hi@babyanne
It's hard to know how to answer your question about the "size" of the tablet?
If you are referring to the Brown Egg Blue Egg article, they only say 1/4pill.

This I do know - B vitamins are water soluble and any extra is excreted in the urine, so it would be unlikely that you will overdose using just 1/4pill daily.
