They don't free range! (Except 3 that can fly over my 7 foot fence but they fly back in to lay)
Now my last batch of chickens, they had a nest if over 30 eggs in the middle of a bunch of irises at my neighbors, which is five feet from the road.

Oh, I had a sizeable nest under a prickly pear cactus.
The hill behind our house is covered in vinca and pine needles, there was a prickly pear growing next to a ponderosa pine tree, the nest was nestled in all that prickliness.
