English Shepherd as Poultry Guardian

Ben does fight with 4 year old son regularly. Both bite and pull on others tail. Son is worse of two. Ben is used as teaching tool around kids so that moderates in with child conflicts. Last round he had over 500 kids pet him within 4 hours. He did well.

Yes my old girl, Poppy, has been a great teacher. But I still want something gentle (my girls are 1 and 3) Hoping to get a versatile dog, guard, family pet, and herd dog. Poppy was never trained and managed all of this well (she was so focused on what I wanted that even though we didn't have the proper commands she helped me).

Sorry to hear about Poppy, wish you and thing 1 and thing 2 good luck in finding a good replacement.

Please forgive the intrusion. We had 'English Sheplerds' when I was a kid and I haven't seen a real one for many years.

I now have one Caucasian Ovchrka and several young dogs that were produced when I covered the C.O. with my Blue Heeler stud dog. All these dogs have very heavy coats and I wouldn't even consider clipping their coats. It insulates them from heat/sun just as it does from the cold.

If I were to clip any hair, I would use a #50 surgical blade and shave their stomachs. I am fortunate to have a walk-in freezer where we freeze large tubs of ice that give ample relief in the warmer days here.

Again...please excuse my jumping in. I really enjoy following your thread!!!

The heavy coat does not provide benefit for an active dog. The heat generated by active dog dwarfs that taken up from sun. If dog inactive in full sun you might benefits you are looking for. My dogs are most active at night even during heat of summer and high heat does slow them down. Hounds have short hair in part because of their sustained activity while hunting.

These are not hounds and are loosed only at night. They essentially lay around or walk about most of the time until they see/scent some kind of intruder. Further, they have access to a deep creek and a couple of ponds to cool down. I'll say no more about it but I still contend that clipping a dog does him no favors.
