Everyone's a critic now.

To preface, my chickens don't freak out easily. They've learned Big bucket full of rocks being carried by the human over your head: of course you ignore the human, why would you get out of the way?
However, my chickens have acted suspicious of me when I wear a blue-toned top. Greens, browns, neutrals are completely fine but otherwise they need verbal confirmation for some minutes that I am not an alien👽. They've not had a noticeable issue with blue dresses or pants. When I do have a purple or blue top, they act similarly to how they would strangers, which isn't very panicked, just side-eyeing for some time, 5+ minutes, before allowing the person to pick them up. Never have they hated shoelaces or drawstrings, but they do believe every button is something that MUST be pecked, especially if it's located on my rump!

It's not my clothes, nor my shoes. But if I have a shovel or rake in my hands, they run and hide in the coop.
Shovel and rake are fine with my group too. Any shovel, any rake. Leaf blower is fine too. An entire ladder is good (some will get on the rungs if I'm not looking. Drill, branch lopper, all fine. They're just very chill if I'm in there to do work.

Nothing I've worn or carried or done or said has seemed to freak out, worry or terrify my flock. I guess I vary my appearance often enough that nothing I do or wear surprises them. I typically carry a cane, so a rake or shovel is just, ho-hum. They know that when they hear the back doors slam that goodies are likely to follow, so they don't much care what I look like. Maybe I'll wear a basket over my head tomorrow to see if they notice. 🤔

I've put chickens in a wheelbarrow just so I didn't run them over with it, and I have to shut them away if I'm using anything like power tools or a saw because they want to investigate.

They don't get scared or worried about anything I wear - they just dislike certain things and make that known, or try to eat them.

The entirety of this is way too relatable! :gig

The farmer recently harvested his corn. It's been a thing of mystery to the chickens who would thankfully only go in a row or two. Some of them are young enough that all they know is that cornfield there.

The day it got harvested, it was loud! They ran like heck, some to the coop. Most stopped and turned around to gawk.

It was hilarious seeing them all standing there for about 5 minutes, not moving, just watching.

I brought home our Christmas tree (balsam fir) Saturday afternoon and tied it to the back deck to let it drink up water before bringing it inside. The chickens were terrified at The Giant Tall Green Thing.

We finally got it inside this afternoon, and now the chickens are terrified at the absence of The Giant Tall Green Thing.

(“Giant” = 7 1/2 feet tall)
