Expectant parent club! Where the pregnant people hang out.

I'll be 14 weeks tomorrow, and I've felt sick to my stomach all day. It just keeps rolling. The very thought of food or of putting something to my lips makes me want to ralph.

On top of that, I'm taking a 'script for a UTI. Dr's office called earlier this week, said my urine came back positive for a UTI. great. just perfect.

Let me start off by saying that I think the whole fear of sleeping on your back is thing is way over-hyped. If you're not uncomfortable, you're probably not harming your baby at all. Do you think that people 200 years ago had doctors telling them not to sleep on their backs? No, and we're all here today to read this.

With that out of the way - I think your best bet would be to put a single pillow behind your back - just a bed pillow, nothing more. It doesn't have to be extremely large, just something to keep you from laying fully on your back. Those snoogles look like they would make me claustrophobic too (and I love my body pillow while pregnant!)!!

If that's too much for you, you might think about putting a few tennis balls under your bottom sheet - you could potentially even tape them there so they don't move. This should work as long as you sleep in approximately the same place every night. You could also fashion some sort of belly band with tennis balls on it, but that sounds as bad as wearing pajamas to bed

Good luck!

Yah, Tennis balls under the sheet may work...

DH is in Nursing School, and they are doing their Maternity learning right now, and I guess the instructor was talking about how dangerous it can be to sleep on your back, that Usually nothing will happen, but if baby happens to be in the right position he can put too much preassure on two main arteries that run through your back, and cut of Blood flow/Oxygen to the baby. So DH doesn't want to take any chances, and really I don't either, but I can't help what I do in my sleep when I don't know I'm doing it.

I know what you mean - I do lots of things (including trying to only sleep on my left side) because of a fear of "what if". Its definitely better safe than sorry, but most of it has little basis in fact. If you can find me even one story where a baby died because its mother slept on her back, I'll be shocked.

Hope the tennis balls work for you!!

If you were occluding a vessel you would be symptomatic (hypoxic), too -- even while sleeping, and the discomfort would cause you to move. Don't sweat the small stuff, Sister. I do use a king-sized pillow to keep me from rolling over onto just my back...mainly b/c it causes me too much discomfort joint/muscle-wise. Plus, if I'm fully on my back, then I'm pretty much stuck there...lol.

WELL SAID. I couldn't agree more. I've had two c-sections (shouldn't have had the second one, but that's a long story [one of my few soapbox issues]) and I will have to say that the recovery is awful! The first time, not so bad, but the second one I thought I would NEVER quit hurting. Thankfully, this time, I have an OB-GYN who is very VBAC friendly, and on-board with me having a vaginal birth this time -- he even has two mid-wives in his office who are very encouraging. They may be more on-board b/c I'm an RN and they know that I know the risks involved -- but the reality is, it's very risky to have a third c-section, too...so I'm running risks either way. Mainly, I just want the pain up-front, instead of taking it home with me for two weeks while I'm trying to take care of an infant!!

Anyway, just from having been in a nurse's position with women giving birth, I am not scared at all -- and none of you girls should be either. It's a hurry-up-and-wait gig, and then (usually) the pushing is uneventful and not dramatic at all -- the big event comes at the end when BABY is in your arms, and all of the pain is forgotten!

Chin up, Sisters!! Our bodies are made to do this, and we should trust them! Get your minds in-sync with what your bodies already know how to do!!

OH-OH!- Happytxchick, can I jump on your c-section soapbox with ya?!?!?!? I am so stinkin AGAINST repeat c-sections that are SOOOO only done because DR's are lazy and want to time our childrens births around THEIR time schedules! There are so few real reasons to preform a repeat c-section its ridiculous. All the policies and so-called 'dangers' are a bunch of bullsh@t! I had 2 VBACS with NO problems, and so have many, many other women. The potential for a problem to crop up during a VBAC is so freaking small it barely exists. I think its so sad how the medical society has put such a scare into so many fully capable women.

Ladies- if have had a c-section before, and want to deliver vaginally, you CAN do it!! To heck with DR's policies and hospital policies! If you show up in active labor and simply refuse to sign the papers saying you agree to a c-section, they have NO choice but to let you have a natural birth! AND they cant legally deny you pain meds either!! If you had a previously complicated c-section, or your baby is high risk for any reason, or you know you have a condition that would make a vaginal birth dangerous, of course have a c-section for the safety of your child and yourself. Otherwise, dont let anyone bully you into a surgery you dont need or want- they cant MAKE you do it, they can just try to scare you into it. If your DR refuses to do a VBAC, who cares?!? There WILL be an attending physician on duty at the hospital that will be capable of delivering your baby, the only difference is you may not have met them before, but thats really not a big deal in the end.

Natural, vbac or c-section- all that really matters is a healthy mom and baby, be strong all you mamas, you can do this!!!

Ok, sorry for the rant on my 'borrowed' soapbox!!

thanks for this....I have had to give up on trying to maintain a sleeping postition. I have a slipped disc in my lumbar spine and my mattress is old and has a freaking crater in it. I tried to avoid sleeping on my back or on my stomach, but if I lie on my side my back hurts so bad I can't function for a few hours in the morning. So...get ready to gasp....I mostly sleep on my stomach. Thanks to the large crater in my mattress I can accomplish that comfortably.
I was just thinking the other day how people in the 1800's slept however they slept (prolly had more miscarriages back then though). They also would do all sorts of work and lifting too. We must use science to our advantage, but not let it freak us out too terribly much.
My DR said that the occlusion of the vessels from lying on your back will be more detrimental to you than the baby. But Kelsey's doc seems to do things differently than mine, and in all fairness...if my doc had not told me that I didn't HAVE to use condoms after having the IUD removed I wouldn't be sharing in this post right now

in other topics....I had a st patty's day chick born yesterday! looks like a barred rock! Hopefully more hatch today, she's a 1st time mama too so hopefully she does well!

I'm feeling sort of the same way. I get hungry, but my stomach is not cooperating. I haven't threw up yet, but I have felt like I was going to a couple of times.

Plus, my sinuses are TERRIBLE right now and I can't take anything. I'm really hoping that I don't get a sinus infection.

Ok, I'm jumping in on this!! My last baby was a c-section because I had placenta previa. I was hoping they'd let me VBAC this time. My Dr is a Christain, so I asked her to please pray about it, and see what God decides. She absolutely looked crushed when I asked her that, and said it was because her insurance she carries on her practice will not ALLOW her to let her patients VBAC - they're too worried about a lawsuit. Plus, she said the hospital has a policy against VBACS.

So, I'm hoping I do not have a repeat of placenta previa this time, and since it's my sixth baby, I'm hoping I hit hard and fast labor and VBAC before they have the chance to stop me.
