Ms.FuzzyButts :

I had to go back in to the OB today to have my pap smear and to go over my bloodwork from Thursday... My doc was giving my the lowdown on having a baby after the age of 35 and how the baby has a 1 in 264 chance of having Down Syndrome or a 1 in 100 chance of having some other genetic anomoly because I am 36 and if I want anymore after this, the babys' chances would be slimmer as I got older..... But that there was still a good chance this baby would be normal..... And that I needed to go ahead and have genetic testing so I would know what the baby's odds are in case it isn't good I can abort or decide to go ahead with it... WTH??? I know it's her job to inform me of any and everything... but good grief!!

It's my first baby... Why bring up doom and gloom.. Why not just slip the test in the next time she draws blood and if something is wrong, then drop the bomb.... But did she have to rain on my parade today????

I had my 5th baby last April and 13 days after he was born I turned 43. There are some non-invasive tests that you can have done if you want. The way I looked at it, I was going to have the baby no matter what, but IF there was something wrong with him I would like to know so I would prepared. I opted not to have an amnio but I did do the Nuchal Translucency ultrasounds and Free Beta-HCG/PAPP-A blood tests. The ultrasounds were done at 12 and 18 weeks. Blood was drawn at one of those appointments, I think the first one. Maybe you should ask your OB about these tests. You are in no way too old to be having your first baby!! Stupid doctor...

Oooooo... In that case I have a question I can't resist.

What brand pump do you recommend? I'm going to be getting one so I have a store onhand and for DH to bottlefeed our little man sometimes. There's so many conflicting opinions out there on which ones are better than others... I'd make an appointment at our hospital but I'm kinda in the middle of a dispute with the OB department and it's left me not wanting to ask them for a tissue, let alone an additional appointment.

I can help you with that since I've been pumping exclusively for over 9 months now (my baby refused the breast after being in the NICU and bottle fed for 6 days). Since I don't work I didn't need any bells and whistles with my pump, just a really good, powerful pump. This is the one I got and I LOVE it, it's small and it works great! http://www.diapers.com/product/productdetail.aspx?productid=7316

That was my personal favorite as well, but most of my moms prefer the Medela ones. BTW, the Lansinoh pump at the stores is just a purple Purely Yours.

That's what I am thinking.... Like another poster said, there was a 53 year old having her first baby and it was ok.. People do it all the time... Heck a 23 year old can have a baby with Down's or something just as easily as I or a 50 year old.. So why pick on us older people.....

Another breast pump question:
I used the Medela Symphony (rental) with my last baby. I had only used a really cheap (less than $20) pump I got from walmart that only did one side at a time and that got old and hurt a lot. I got the rental later and loved the dual pumps but it was really painful at times too so I was wondering what is the difference in that pump and the Ameda Purely Yours. The price is considerably different but I am wondering if it is as strong, holds up as good as the symphony, and pumps pretty much at the same speed as symphony.
If you consider I will be paying $50 a month for the symphony, the Ameda Purely Yours would be paid for in 3 months if I just got that one but hate to put the money out on it if it is not as good or really close. I will be going back to work part time and plan on pumping at least 6 months but would love to try and go a year. The symphony was really big and hard to deal with at work when you consider I am a rural mail carrier.

Well, it will not hold up as well as the symphony. The Symphony is made to last years of constant use. But I can tell you that my Purely Yours went through me (nursed 28 months) and two of my sister in laws. (New pump kits of course). The Pump in Style (which is MEdela's purchase pump similar to the Symphony) or the Purley yours would be the way to go, especially if you are thinking of more children later. They will easily handle it and are much more portable.

As far as the pain, I wonder if you had the suction to high. Or another common problem would be the flanges are to small. That is another difference between the Medela and Ameda. The Medela has a way to buy larger flanges and change them out. IF your nipples are large enough to rub along the side of the flanges, you probable need a larger size.

I personally liked the Purely Yours better, but most of the women I worked with preferred the Pump in Style.

Hey I get to post here! LOL

I'm 8 weeks and 5 days along. Due September 17 - this is number 6 for us. We currently have 1 girl and 4 boys, so kind of hoping we get a second girl but will be happy with a healthy baby of either gender!
