I always loved having that date, don't you love it when your b-day falls on Mothers day?

So where are the pics of your baby?

I'm due August 23rd but will probably be scheduling a c-section a week or so before that)....

Very exciting and congrats! Will this be your first? My first was born September 2, 2009, and I remember thinking the summer heat would never end! Hopefully, it won't be as harsh for you!

Yup it's my first.

Well, SHE is my first.

Unfortunately, it gets above 100 here for weeks at a time during July and into August...I am NOT looking forward to that!

Yep, close to that here, too! I think our AC ran non-stop for those 2 months...I froze my husband out of the house most days!

So I have a baby shower dilemma...I am planning to have my shower in July.

July around here is HOT. Like 100+ degrees.

I am inviting 50+ people.

Without having to rent a place to have this--I was thinking of doing it in our yard (we have a HUGE yard) and I have a 10 x 10' tent we could put food in & stuff....our house is just too small for that many people.

So I was thinking because it is so hot outside and the original time I thought of (2pm) would be the hottest part of the day--to move it to the evening. But then my mom pointed out that if I had it in the evening--people would expect "real" food.

But it wouldn't be too bad to grill hamburgers, hotdogs & chicken or something--but mom says that's tacky?

Funny, that's what we did at our wedding!

I thought maybe bags of chips, veggie tray, a bunch of mini-sub sandwiches, fruit, etc. Besides, when it's really hot out I don't think people will eat as much?

So then I thought about doing a brunch type thing--maybe 10:30 or 11am...serving fruit, muffins, croissants, coffee, orange juice. Then by the time it got too hot out, people would probably be bored anyway.

So now I'm not sure what to do?

I don't want to make a huge production out of this (although the more people I invite, the more presents I will get!)

Any suggestions?

I think this summer, I will FINALLY get my A/C! I hope! We have central A/C but it broke before we moved in and apparently the part is $700 so we were going to wait and just get a new unit, altogether.

Last summer, we put two covered porches on the back (south) side of the house which helps cool the house--along with a white metal roof, new insulation and windows...so all of that helps. In 2009, we barely escaped a wildfire which burned down all of our huge shade trees.

We have one of those little window units for our bedroom but the rest of the house could really use it.

Rarefeathers, I hate to tell ya, but at 50+ people, its already a pretty big production!!

A brunch sounds like the perfect solution to the mid-day heat! A tent will help alot- good idea! I think it would be fun to incorporate traditional brunch-like foods into the menu, ie: fruits (a few watermelons carved like baby strollers filled with fruit looks way cool and is easy to do) maybe non-alcoholic versions of fun drinks (and a few w/alcohol for those who want it, but light and fresh) fun finger foods, small sandwitches, ya know- light foods that dont require too much prep, but maybe can be made a day in advance.

If you really want to go all out against the heat, you could set up a misting system around the top edge of the tent (unless humidity is horrible where youre at), it can really help cool things down, especially around food.

I dont think serving hot dogs and burgers is tacky, its not the royal wedding or anything!! Subs and chips and snackish foods sounds about right too, many, many people go that route. You could also enlist close family and friends to bring a few dishes themselves for the party, it takes some of the stress off you to provide for everyone, and often, folks do like to help and contribute to such a fun cause.
A baby shower is usually casual dress, or maybe dressy-casual, and people expect to have a good time and be comfortable. Games are a big part of things and there are lots of ideas for those online, as well as prizes for the 'winners'!

A baby shower is a celebration, not a stuffy event! I hope you dont stress too hard, its not worth it. If someone wants to have input into the situation, maybe you can just smile, nod your head, and tell them- "That sounds wonderful, I'll be happy to let you handle that part!"

I for one hope you have a fabulous time and get LOTS of baby goodies!
