I have a friend who refused to be induced and transferred to a birthing center at 43 weeks and gave birth naturally two days later.

Ouch! I think I'd be SCREAMING by the time I reached 41 weeks, let alone hanging on for another two! Props to your friend, but I wouldn't do that. I'm all for better living through chemistry.

I hear ya in a way. I was 41 when I delivered and I couldn't imagine having waited till 43 but I probably would've but I guess I'm kind of hippie like that.

Hope all of you sleep well tonight -- except for me...I need to have lots of contractions!

Since no one has mentioned this (i think, but i could be wrong) another way to stimulate labor is nipple stimulation. It can lead to powerful contractions, so be careful and ready, in case it works for you!

All you do is kinda replicate what baby might do when nursing (this info is available online in case you want to look up a better description on how to do it). You just pinch the nipple between your thumb and pointer finger and kinda pinch and roll it while gently tugging outward. Yes, it may hurt a bit if your nipples are already sensitive, but if you plan to breastfeed, ya might as well toughen those babies up, LOL!! I think youre only supposed to do it for a few minutes, then wait 5 or 10 and try again, repeat for an hour or so, then give it an hour or two to see if the hormones the stimulation causes start doing anything for you.

I did this with my first baby since my labor slowed a bit after my water broke, and boy did it get things going! My girl was born in six hours from the first painful contraction! Hows that for a speedy first baby labor?! I really think it was a combo of no painkillers and the fact that I kept stimulating the nipps, even during labor- the contractions got hard and fast when I did that, even the nurses told me to stop because they didnt want me to 'go' before the dr/midwife got there!

Please, look it up before you try anything- Im no DR or anything, but I thought Id share only because I know how much the last few days and weeks can suck, and I really think it helped me get things going.

I'm back...but just to share and move on to the new mommy club

I hope happy txchick and kelsey go soon and hopefully you have a good experience like we did. I am gonna brag a little here.....
I had my dr appt at 1:30 and declined the membrane stripping, was 4 1/2cms dilated and still 90%. We made an appt for next week but again, my dr thought she would see me before then. Contractions started at about 745pm on monday night (which all day monday I was full of energy and very normal feeling) and I wasn't sure if they were it, my only hint was that they didn't go away when I laid down. I wasnt even gonna tell my DH, but I mentioned that I was feeling wierd and we might not have to wait much longer. at 9:00 I got some ice cream, took 2 bites and with a seering pain I stood up to be covered in fluid. briefly thought...did I pee myself? but on my way to the bathroom niagara falls was happening and I knew what it was. My DH was so cute, he jumped up and was literally running around trying to get stuff.
BTW....when your water breaks, it breaks and breaks and breaks, I kept waiting for it to stop so I could wear dry pants to the hospital...it didn't stop until after Shane had arrived. So I walked into the hospital totally soaked (had my DH put down towels on the car seat).
In short... my contractions were very irregular but as we got closer to the hospital it seemed to be between 3-5 mins apart and getting more intense with each one. Was 5cm when I got admitted, fully ruptured membranes. They wheeled me up to the birthing center, by then I had decided it was epidural time.....OUCH! I was dying. well the anesthesiologist was already working on someone else (why is there only 1?) and I had to wait, so they asked me if I wanted Nubain (sp?) for the meantime. I said hell ya, anything! Hurry! so a few minutes later I am like where the heck is my drugs?? she leaves the room to find out and I had a feeling like I was gonna push out the biggest crap in the world, knew I shouldn't push but couldn't help it. So when the nurse came back and I told her that I felt like I had to crap big time she ran to get the RN and she checked me....10cm she says...what?? She explained that we had less than 10 minutes until I was done and that pain meds were not gonna work in time. the dr RAN in, gloved up, just in time to help me push 2 more times and SWOOSH...Shane Flew out, if he had a parachute, he would have caught air time.
so I got to experience natural birth, whether or not I wanted to and am extremely lucky to have only had 2 hours of labor. Did retain my placenta and had to go under general anesthesia to have it removed though, but it went fine and I feel amazing for having a baby. My DH thinks I am superwoman and keeps telling everyone that, lol.
