I just noticed one of my hens has an injured eye. I don’t know how it happened, I’ve had her separated from my flock for a couple weeks now because she’s been aggressive with the other hens, so it wasn’t a fight between chickens. There are bees in her area, but I’ve never had a hen get stung before (to my knowledge). Due to her aggression, I haven’t had a chance to look at her closely, but I managed to get a few photos. Her eyebrow area is swollen and her eye looks very white/blue (they’re usually a dark brown), it looks like there’s green/yellow liquid around the eye. Is it infected? Is this something I can treat? She seems like her usual aggressive self, so whatever it is isn’t affecting her personality or energy yet, but she does seem to be using her other eye to see. Any ideas what this could be and how to cure or prevent it?

You need to gather her up and get a better look at that. When you do, have someone take close up photos.

Before you catch her up, have a few things on hand so you can address the eye. Saline for cleaning the eye, a few q tips, Terramycin eye ointment or triple antibiotic ointment.

It can be easier to grab them off a roost at night when it is dark to get a look at the eye. When I separate a chicken, I try to do it in a dog crate or cage inside the coop or run where they can stay part of the flock. Otherwise it is hard to reintegrate without pecking and fighting. Look to see if the eye is intact, or if there are bubbles, foam, or pus in around the eye.
