Falling Down Heights, my daily life

Thanks goodness the worst of the cold is done after tonight! Back to more average freezing.

Rudy the Lone Chick has started squatting for me. Hopefully that means she's going to start paying for her room and board!
Average freezing is going to feel like a heat wave! 😁

Very much so!

Right now, I'm wearing long-johns over sweatpants, two pairs of socks, a t-shirt, a sweater, and a fleece jacket, and knit gloves. Inside.

My bedding consists of three blankets and two comforters (duvets), and I was still chilled.

Now that the sun is up, temperatures will slowly start to creep up. Animals are staying in their shelters for a few more hours. Not even going to do rabbits yet, as water freezes over too quickly.

Did I mention is was almost -30 this morning? Celsius, of course.

Looking forward to daytime highs over -10. Someone shoot me now.

Hang in there Wind, warmer temps are coming. :hugs

Currently at -13c, and it's slowly going up from there. Should be around -10 when I get up and expecting a high of -6. BIKINI WEATHER!

But of course, the milder weather brings snow so I'll be shovelling and spreading shavings or hay or straw.

Still, I think all the critters will be happy with that.

Rudy is being very vocal today, making sounds I'd never heard from her before. Including the egg song.

I put a flake of hay in her cage and she promptly made a nest in it. OH! Turned to look at her and she's sitting in her nest now!

I'm expecting her to lay soon with all this behaviour. She's over 5 1/2 months old so is more than due.

It's about the time of year for the girls to start up again. It's sporadic, but I do get extra eggs from time to time from the outdoor gang. Actually got an OEGB egg today (last one was a few weeks ago) and I'm pretty sure one of the Cochin outside is also laying now.

The indoor Cochin have also resumed laying, or at least one of them has but I'm pretty sure it's both.

So far today I've gotten 3 eggs which is more than I've gotten in months!

Now, if only the ducks would start laying too!

SHE DID IT!!! :wee:ya:wee

It's fascinating to watch Rudy now that she's "matured". After laying her first egg two days ago, and me subsequently removing it, her beautiful little nest was completely dismantled. But today, as she prepares to lay her second one, she is rebuilding it.

She's also doing all the weird clucking again, driving Taiyo the dog crazy (he goes insane when they start doing that!).

Also, even though I'd never given her any before, she snarfed down the crumpled egg shell I gave her, instinctively knowing she needed it.

She's also mellowed down a lot. Her pre-puberty attitude was terrible, pecking at me whenever I gave her food or water, or cleaned her cage.

Can't wait for her to be going outside. I feel so bad for her, being stuck in here because she was an only chick that I hatched out way too late in the season to properly introduce her to one of the flocks.

Hopefully it starts warming soon and she can get outside. 😊❤️
