Famous Hatchery 'Pure Bred' Appearances

Ok folks, not sure if my thoughts matter... There's a world of difference between show birds and back yard birds. I focus on survival skills, followed by temperament, followed by size and followed by egg production. I want to save endangered breeds, but not sacrifice layers. Not sure that makes sense.
Yes, that makes a LOT of sense I like what you’ve said I I totally agree!

You are doing what people have been doing for millennia, selecting for desired production traits and those that adapt the bird to the environment and conditions you provide for them. I would be happy to have a bird bred with your priorities, especially if I wanted to free range...

I don't know of any sources that compare birds. These are from the APA SOP book.

The SOP book unfortunately does not have accurate pictures. Did you see the Buckeyes? They're hideous! Now mine are above hatchery stock but they aren't Baker's birds. (Aaron Baker is a well known Buckeye breeder.)
The written description is the only perfect bird, and can not be interpreted by one person _I wish it wasn't so vague sometimes.
I agree. Many fairs don't have rules like the APA and ABA. Here they have a utility class where you can enter just about anything. At one of the sanctioned shows I was at, an exhibitor brought in a Red Sex-Link and entered it as a New Hampshire Red. The judges disqualified it but you can enter them at most fairs.
Well it was MN state fair. And it was in production class not American class, lol.
I don't think your show quality pictures are completely correct; that hen has a white earlobe (welsummers lay brown eggs) and that rooster has a shape that reminds me more of a leghorn.
Here are a few pictures of show quality welsummers-

Why such floppy combs? They aren't supposed to have those. They look like my hatchery birds!
Some breeds you could do in the future(not specific to variety):
  • Silkie
  • Serama (American)
  • White Faced Black Spanish
  • Marans
  • Ameraucana
  • Polish
  • Cochin (bantam and/or standard)
  • Brahma
I've never actually seen a hatchery White Faced Black Spanish, but the basketball shaped Cochins are sure to make people appreciate exhibition breeding.
Thank you! I did not breed her, I raised her and 6 other pullets (and a lot of cockerels I stupidly culled too early). She's from a breeder close to me that has been working from Frank Reese birds for a few years and they've done very nicely with them. There is another pullet that's very similar to her and actually weighed more the last time I weighed them all, so I'm thinking I'm going to use both of them this fall and see what I get (my cock is from the same people, but different hatch). I'm going to be working on less cushion and, of course, better tails on the males.
Mmm Frank Reese is known for his excellent turkeys.
Hey, can someone please educate me on the difference between "Blue" and "Self Blue?"
Genetically different. Blue is incomplete dominant.
Lavender is lighter and is a feather shredder so I despise it, a recessive gene. Neither are present in Nankins, but grey feathers can be.
A question to ponder while waiting for @BlackHackle next post....

Do birds with SOP produce superior eggs??????? Is there an SOP for eggs from SOP hens????
:plbb
Nope.
I've heard someone ratting about Ameraucanas never laying "SOP eggs" however it just says as one of the qualities of the breed that it lays blue eggs. Nuthin special.
One of the reasons I'm glad I decided to leave that breed behind. (Ok not really but its a plus.) No egg prestige in the breeds I chose.

That makes a great deal of sense. And of course your thoughts matter ... that's what "discussion" is all about - and one of the things I like best about BYC. The only time the proverbial feathers get ruffled is when the text-only format leaves a bit too much interpretation room. That's a common problem everywhere on the Internet. The difference here on BYC is that we know it's just interpretation, not nasty intent.

After the battles are over we get to stop in time for tea and carry friendly discussion.

Now apparently
No that's just what I call the "discussion"
I have not really been paying much attention though, just waiting for the next picture, well if BH ever gets around to it lol.
here is another show quality chicken for those of you who are bored-

And if you are still bored, here is the classical Teen Chases Fox Chasing Chicken-
The fox meets the SOP btw, unfortunately the teen does too. Well unfortunately for the fox.

Well, if this is WWIIII, what is WWIII?

Feather shredder?
I've heard the terms Blue and Self-Blue used almost interchangeably, so I was curious about the difference. I never knew that the latter was actually the "lavender" color until tonight. If I ever come across a lavender Nankin in my stock, I'll know that either one of my hens went to an unauthorized party ... or I'm going to be very, very wealthy! :)
