This is a fantastic topic. Lots of great info about a lot of different breeds. Good to hear (read?) that most of the breeds I've narrowed it down to have been mentioned. My Dream Flock (of four hens max stupid City of Arlington) has: Good temperment, handles heat, cold and confinement well, lots of M/L eggs, colorful basket...

Definitely taking notes, thanks!

My favorite is New Hampshire Red. I have 2 hens that are quite different. I bought them out of the same bin at Orsclens farm store. One is light red no bigger than a leghorn. If I sit down in a lawn chair with a bowl of grapes she will jump into my lap to get at them. She lays about 20 eggs every 3 weeks. She started laying almost 2 months before all my others did. The eggs are about medium size and are medium brown. I call her Little Red. The other one is darker bot not as dark as a RIR. She is as big as my Buff Orpington hen. She lays about 4 to 5 eggs a week. They are almost as dark as the ones my Wellsummer hen lays. And she lays almost a Jumbo sized egg. I call her Big Red. I also have three hens that are mostly Barred Rock with a little Silver Laced Wyandotte in them. They are all barred rock colored but 2 of them has rose combs. I have a Pure Domineque Rooster.

I would have to say that my favorite breeds (that I've personally owned) Are faverolles, TRUE ameraucanas, and sussex. I just LOVE their personalities, their looks, and everything about them. My ameraucana roo is really shaping out to be a wonderful boy, my sussex is such a good girl, and my faverolle........I just dont have words to describe how much I love her. And I do love the australorps and marans......

I love my EEs, but I dont really consider them a breed, but more like a type. Each individual is SO varied as to what their temperments may be if you don't know their background. I love all the strange colors they come in, and all my girls are good girls.

i like barred rocks, ri reds, jersey giants and non standard ameraucanas but my favorite is the cubalaya. last winter when the temperature was below 10 degrees they were my best layers. they use less feed and look good in your yard, too.

I'm not even going to try to choose just one, not possible. I really like my Houdan. They lay nearly every day and I love the fact that they are such an old breed. Next I love my Polish, also because of their history and their unusual looks. However, the Polish, of course, don't lay well. My welsummers and EE's I love because they are mild mannered and lay well. My Japanese because I think they are pretty and my few cochin just because they are sweet.

Wow, this is so hard, but if I had to choose to keep only ONE breed, I would have to say my Ameraucanas. They are beautiful, multiple colors, fairly friendly, good foragers, reasonably productive layers, fly well

( which could make them a little more likely to surivive predator attacks though obviously there is a downside to this) and their eggs are good sized and SO gorgeous.
