I remember the first time I got chickens I could not wait! sleeping was hard for a week before I got them. (although I am still excited about getting chickens to this day)

I also remember as a kid loving to watch my aunt and uncles flock of hens parading around the farm. That's what really got me started on chickens!

What are some of your favorite chicken memories?

D’ARTAGNON jumping up on the gate to the chicken yard to greet me every time I come out the front door or arrive home in my car. He was 6 years old when a fox got him this spring.

My favorite memory is probably when my chickens jumped the fence and literally crossed the road! We looked out the window and said "uh, is that our chickens over there?" "Yeah, let's go get 'em!" There was only two of us, and 6 chickens, so it took three trips. Oh, and it was raining too!

My first indoor broody hatching eggs.....never again. She stood on top of the food dish and proceeded to diarrhea all over our carpet. The chicks were super cute though.

Another one of my favorite memories is Loyal Penny. I used to call her Broken-toed Penny because she had two broken toes as a chick that healed crooked, but later switched her name to Loyal. She was with me for four years, and was the best hen I ever had. She passed away a couple of months ago from egg binding and possibly lass egg.

She was extra dark for a RIR, and tall. She had a long neck and long legs, making her extra tall. She would always stand tall and cock her head and look me directly in the eye on a way that always made me laugh.

When she was first eggbound I put her in a pen in the yard separate from the others. When I came to lock her in the kennel at night she wasn't there. I looked for her all over the yard in the dark before heading inside to get a flashlight. As I walked onto the porch I heard a squack. I looked over to my left and there was Penny, sitting on the picnic table bench! She did this to me 3 more times, the silly-sweet girl!

I miss you, Loyal Penny!!!
