February Hatch-A-Long

only ... I set 9 and I’m wandering what I got myself into LOL. It is my first go round.

I only set 24 shipped eggs, my hens eggs were not fertile. I don't count the undeveloped eggs, so actually 22 viable eggs set, -2 for the day 3 death rings.

20 at the moment. day 5

9 is good number though, if I hatch and have over 8, you can get buyer's remorse pretty quick.

My dog is not interested in baby birds, we even got him a squeaky toy for Christmas, he would carry it gentle so it would not squeak. He does like to chase chipmunks though.

I have a question for you guys... how do you incubate saddle air cell eggs? do you do the same as if they were detached air cells? I'm asking because I have an egg with an embryo that seems to be stuck to the saddled air cell. They're only 3 days old so I can't see much lol

I incubate and hatch them upright in cut down cardboard egg cartons. Hand turn, too.

I have used a hole punch on cardboard egg cartons, I am currently using the turner cups from a diff incubator as resting cups.

Well first hatch is done, lost 5 fully developed chicks one hatched with body parts outside of navel, one was malpositioned, one didn't absorb yolk died in egg and the rest were hard to say I always candle when I have late hatchers compared to rest to ensure movement and when I don't see movement...I investigate. (When I am going to be popping chicks out after they are dried off and nobody has pipped)

I think I am going to have to recalibrate my thermometer. I attempted a "dry hatch" at 30% humidity and I heard such great reviews...but I am wondering if my thermometer was off and that is what caused the low hatch rate/early hatchers. All that hatched were out by day 21. So I am wondering if I had high temps.

For my second hatch in a week I have adjusted temps and hopefully will be more successful.
