Fermenting chicken feed, Good idea?

Last couple days.. I have been giving the poor fatherless dogs dry crumbles.. I have been ill.. Covert 19 or China Virus or just old injury which incapacitated me.. Literally.. Looking to call Hospice and a Morphine drip button.. That bad.. better now. They won't eat it and the water freezes in this subzero too single digits on a heated pedestal.. Second week going on three.. I give them scratch before I enter the run.. keeps them from underfoot.. literally. Stepped on one and she still limps. FF is all they will eat now.. and water was not an issue in winter. It is now.. Freeze's.. I cover my FF to keep out the schmutz and drowning mice.. This is important to keep out the harmful 'MOLD'.. Just a suggestion.
They just get enough in their little container for their daily serving. They finish it up in about 15 min, then I take the container inside and wash it, so no chance of freezing, but ty! Hope you get to feeling better

Thank you.. doing better. Actually have some energy.. That from a lazy daisy.. not really lazy, just too much work for one guy. Think the general rule is about one hour.. Mine very rarely leave any leftovers.. If it gets so.. I just starve them a day extra.. They eat it all, which very's only occasionally. It is not torture.. It's training. Take care.

Have you ever fermented pickles..? Guess what happens when they do not remain submerged..? and then what happens to you and your loved ones if consumed.. The white "mold" (SCOBY) on top is good.. the green mold 'actual mold' is bad.. the red mold is deadly. FF is the exact same process.. Do you really want to chance poisoning your babies. Russian Roulette is a very popular game in The Deer Hunter.
Thank you for the trying to to be helpful and "save lives"! :hugs

However if you read my comments you would see...

A) I think FF is over rated and don't do it ANY more.

B) When being stirred once or twice per day.. it stays moist and there isn't enough time for toxic mold to grow on the exposed part..

For me, there was NO chance of poisoning anyone or I would NOT have been doing it all. FWIW.. the term poison and toxic are heavily fear mongered.. Anything that gives you a headache. mild upset stomach, or even causes euphoria is considered toxic.. I have lots of allegedly deadly things growing in my pasture.. turns out.. LIFE is deadly! ;)

I'm glad that you've got this down well enough to give us all an education about what we're doing wrong.. Why do people only focus on what you said that they want to correct? Why do WE worry about correcting others instead of just stating OUR piece and letting it speak for itself.. Are we not able to discern differences of OPINIONS on our own?? I'm guilty of doing the SAME thing.. but I'm TRYING to learn and GROW!

On this point, dear chicken friend.. I respect and appreciate your desire to be helpful BUT whole heartedly disagree with your concern.. NOTING there WERE stipulations made that stirring IS REQUIRED daily.. Mold won't grow on MOST things in a single day here.

I'm not sure of your experience level and haven't seen you around too much yet.. so you probably aren't super familiar with me and vice versa.. I pursue all things fervently especially avian nutrition.. and consider FF to be a WASTE of time and energy that did NOT improve anything for MY flock (or my bottom dollar).. Already thriving under current conditions.. And also.. why should I (or anyone) feel guilty about giving my flock a formulated ration.. FFer's try to insinuate they're somehow doing more for their flock and dry feeding is somehow doing less.. BS!

If you like doing it fine.. it's NOT a better choice than dry feed... it's a different choice..

I'll stick with Purina Flock Raiser, oyster shell on the side free choice.. wet into mash on occasion.. and pasture ranging.. and KNOW beyond any shadow of a doubt that it's the BEST choice for ME and MY flock, in my LOCATION, at THIS time...

No, I won't ever go back to FF on purpose.. and try not to wet more mash than gets eaten in a single day. If I choose to do it.. will be as a source of nutritious enrichment only, also known as a treat. I REALLY like giving treats that DON'T diminish nutrients too far.. Something like game bird pellets instead of scratch actually boosts nutrients... but hey, that's ME!!

Best wishes on your adventures, hope you continue to settle into the community well! :wee

Interesting in this Covid time to think about the differences between immunity and community!

United we stand. Divided we fall. ;)

Rules of thumb are meant to be guidelines at best.. everyone's set up and circumstance is unique.

ONE of the links I posted stated that once the ferment drops below a certain ph it becomes LESS palatable to the birds.. I witnessed it myself.. it isn't training them anything really. It might train you to feed out less or make less.

I NEVER removed mine during daylight.. mixed any "leftover" as the back slop into the container once it was collected in the evening. Day time free loaders are not an issue for me the way they can be for some folks.. who even do scheduled dry feedings.

Did you consider reading any of the links I posted?

Please share how long you've been doing this, what kind of nutritional or avian science degree you have, or where YOUR information is coming from.. why should we take your word?? In all sincerity, NO ugliness intended. TIA!:pop

Opinion, everybody has one.. Like an orifice, many actually. FF saves me MONEY!.. and the chickens are healthier, fatter, happier, more and better eggs. Just my opinion.. not getting on you.. but anytime I have found trouble. I did so with my 'Mouth'.. A nick name of my youth for a time... Now no one speaks. They TEXT or Socialist Media.. then are blocked for their opinion.. as far as Free Range, if I still could.. There would be no need for FF or even scratch except as a treat.. I think you are wrong about FF.. again just my opinion. If I Free Ranged, there would be no need as I can not provide what Nature can in no way.. He who knows it all, has learned nothing.. I am ignorant and am MENSA qualified.. on the Short Bus.. but I can learn.

Even though you may still mock me. It's okay.. Mark Elliot Zuckerberg. I'm Rich!.. and not your enemy but a friend.
I'm sorry, mocking wasn't the intent.. but rather laughing WITH you, taking a look at MYSELF! I knew I should have stated that it was hard to decide whether to put a big ❤️ or the other..

Alas, we are indeed NOT enemies but YES, friends! :highfive:

Adventure on! :thumbsup
