My 29g tank tests perfect, 0 ammonia and nitrites, 5-10ppm nitrates, but I was seeing some bacterial growth on the cover so I committed to another deep clean.

One of my Kuhlis was injured, must have been under the sand as I was vacuuming.

I try to be careful but it sometimes happens.

About 6-7 years ago I had a Kuhli injured during a deep clean, had a gaping wound. I did daily small water changes, she survived. Here she is over this past weekend:

Kuhlis look fun. Then again, everything looks fun when your aquarium isn't big enough:lau

Poor girl. Glad your water test were positive
 
Anyone got any recommendations for where to buy substrate for planted tanks? My local options are very limited (typically gravel and maybe two different color sand and fluval, which just seems like smaller gravel to me).

I got the substrate for mine off of Chewy but its just like what the store im going to get my fish from use. Its not the exact same, but very similar

Last night when i looked at the tank i found little red worms swimming all over.
The only thing that could have had them is the aquarium gravel/substrate
