I've gotten the zebra/striped and the spotted types, but the olive variety is a couple years old.

I have the black nerites. Totally recommend them. They're big, and stunning

I've never seen black nerites, could those be black mystery snails?

I think the spotted are called tiger nerites.

Nope, definitely not Apple snails. They're pure black. I didn't know they existed before getting mine. They go by a bunch of names, here iis what my LFS lists them as

A random question. Can I use any sand in my tank? I want to start re setting up my tank but haven't been to the petshop or fish shop. I have some substrate but not enough for what I want and I'm considering using it on the top of sand. I know I already have some spare coarse (if I'm remembering correctly) sand from my quail's aviary somewhere.

Mixing sand and substrate (gravel) makes a mess.

It's not really gravel but I don't know what it’s called, good to know though!
If I go with just sand does it matter what sand I use?

Right?! Their gorgeous black color helps them blend in with whatever scape you've got going on. I really like this variety

I can see you work a lot with Java fern! I can never keep it alive! Crypts have my heart
