Apistos prefer softer water compared to most cichlids
Our ph in our 75 gallon was always 7.0-8.0 at the end when we had our chiclids we had it at 7.2 i think. So i can get it to a lower ph in a smaller tank.

If doing a breeding tank there shouldnt be anything else in the tank though right?
Because corys and shrimp would eat the eggs

Add lots of leaves, branches, things like that. They can lower the pH significantly. My favourite tannins to add are alder cones, they look cool as well.

Yes, I've always read that it's best they're alone, although I've never attempted a breeding aquarium.

I can't see shrimp harming the apisto eggs or fry, so shrimp would be fine IMO. Cories would probably not work

I plan on adding lots of branches. And i could get some leaves to stay on the branches. I also wanted to try moss on a few of the decorations im making to put in the tank.
Im waiting until Sat for the rest of the items to come before starting the tank.

I was thinking best if they were alone. Maybe i could somehow split the tank and do 3 -4 cockatoo dwarfs on one side and 3-4 of a different dwarf on the other. But i dont think that would work.

I really wanted some blue dream(blue pearl or blue velvet so many different names) shrimp for the tank atleast

So i could do 3 or 4 apistos in one tank.
Im not sure i want to do a breeding tank yet.

I could do
6 cory catfish
2 female bettas
4 blue shrimp
2 dwarf gouramis
Which would be a 71% stock(off of aqadvisor)

I also found german rams which i like, but im not sure how they would do in the above, but without the gouramis.

I wouldn’t suggest only two female bettas. If you wanted to do a female betta sorority, I would have at least 3 female bettas and nothing else (also a heavily planted tank so they have plenty of hiding spots). Female bettas can also be as nasty as male bettas when it comes to tank mates. Female betta sororities are very hard to get right and many times ends up with stressed fish (and possibly some may die). Instead of bettas, I would personally add more cory cats as they like larger schools :)
