This part of the forum has gotten bad. Cluttered with this and that and breeding this with that. Don't post ur mutts on here. I joined this site to talk about breeding pure chickens and there is very little of that on here. The amount of ridiculous post are overwhelming moderators should moderate. I understand this is backyard chickens and most people have a lot of mixes. But that is what has ruined the chicken breeders today. There are people on here with thousands of post that know nothing about chicken breeding showing or genetics but they seem to post dumb questions. Change this part of the forum to pure breeds genetics and showing! Sorry to rant but this is ridiculous!

I agree. A lot of people don't understand the basic concept behind purebred animals. That is fine, but there are other places for that. The admiration of purebred animals, and the desire for quality and continued improvement is not snobbery, it is sophistication. A lot of people misunderstand that.

there's no such thing as a dumb question expcially to those just starting out. it seems most people have cross breeds and not pures, so what. i have both pure and crosses here. all my chickens are pure as i want to show them but i have a minni dashound and a dashound mixed. i have also found over the years that the mutts are always nicer and better minded than the pure breeds. this site has serious breeders but not like the breed/club sites. people here are mainly here to learn and instead i have seen lots of people bashing those who are trying to learn, you have people of all ages (kids included) asking questions and your wanting to say some questions are dumb when no question is dumb. who knows you might be answering a very young child who doesnt know the info about what they asked about.

anyways whats the best way to improve and expand my self blue flock? i've been told the best color to use is an all black and if i couldnt get them then it would be mottled black. with combining those colors would the 1st genration be all black then breeding them back to eaither the self blue or one another give me 50/50? am i getting that right for the colors? could you use white to expand a self blue flock or is white to domanat over the self blue gene or would you just get some wierd/pretty colors?

Yes, black would be the best. Self blue is a simple recessive to it. In just about every breed in which it occurs, the blacks are found in more quantity and better quality than the mottles. I would not use a mottled, you'll be breeding out the white for at least a few generations. You'll never have to do it with self blues from solid blacks. You are wise to stay away from white. There is apt to be a lot hiding under it that you hadn't planned on.

There is dumb questions on this part of the forum like "what will I get with this cross" and what will this cross look like. There was a mutt tread on here a while back maybe people should find that thread ad ask them and quit cluttering this forum. I don't mind answering peoples questions. Its just that no one knows what ur mixes will look like because there is no way to tell. If you look that's most of the treads on here. I have 2 olive eggers but I don't clutter the forum with them. If u want mutts hatch them and see what u get. I bet half the treads on here are what will a silkie and an ee make or what will my polish and orpigton make. And new threads sayin cochin people critique my bird. Put them on the cochin thread or whatever thread. Search and u will find every cross there is in the 790 pages of treads.

I agree with you BBrock. Everything in it's appropriate place. THAT'S when there are no stupid questions, but you don't go into a bakery and ask how to cook a ham.

....I agree with BBrock.....enough with the "What will I get if I cross this with that?" And just because something is "Purebred" doesn't necessarily make it "showable". I believe one needs to start with the written standard and study it as much as possible.....and talk with SEVERAL breeders of the breed/variety they are interested in and go from there. When I first started with exhibition poultry (over 40 yrs. ago), I studied several photos and topics on the breeds and/or varieties that I was wanting to make better and as close to the written standard as possible. The breed clubs were a great help as well. Going to shows and asking "vintage" breeders was my biggest help. Listening to judges judge a class and understanding what was good and not so good. I don't eat my eggs or my bantams....they are for perpetuating the breed and for exhibition ONLY. I don't raise poultry to make any money.... I do it for the love of the breed and to try and help create birds that are better than what I started with. There are "Breeders" of poultry and "Keepers" of poultry.....both are unique have a purpose in the World of Poultry..... I'm very happy that we have a thread like this to talk and discuss breeding and exhibition...... Thanks, Rusty Hart

Yes it is interesting to see how this section of BYC has changed in the past few years. There are still a few good breed threads on here but not very many. Most of them are the equivalent of spam....the what will I get if I crossed crowd.... My dad did that for years and all you got were a bunch of mixed up chickens that didnt look like anything. The best thread was one recently talking about how the Standard was useless because chickens should just be judged on them being a chicken...if that makes any sense.
I have posted mainly on the Wyandotte thread the past few years and it seems to have now been denigrated to a thousand pictures of bad hatchery wyandottes named "flossie or abigail". I just have to remember that so many on this site have very little experience with chickens and agriculture and look at them as pets not commodities which they are.
The people in charge...(I will not call them by name or title) are going to let every post stay unless it is offensive to them or someone else. So all of the newbie threads that show up all of the time will continue.
I see a rift coming in the future where BYC people and true dedicated breeders will no longer co-exist. Starting to happen already honestly. They are just too different. True BYC'ers would never think of hatching out a 1000 birds to keep less than 100 to breed from and sell and then get rid of the rest of them to be made into dog food. Just the same true breeders would never think of having a bird in their house with a diaper on them either.......

To each their own. I just dont like a person who just "discovered" chickens on a website a few days ago and starts arguing about how something is so and so while I have been raising chickens and all thats associated with that for well over 30 years. Guess thats why I just talk to the few friends I have left on this website and kind of ignore the others.....
Have a great day everyone!
John

its not a dumb question i have asked about color mixes and what they would turn out to be and got around 20 different pics and have done the same with cross breeding and have gotten just as many pics(each pic of course was different but gave me an idea of what the chicks would look like). for those who want to cross breed they just need to find a person who has done that crossbreed before and has pics of how the chicks turned out. the only thing with that is you can never really know what you will get as each chicken is different with different gentics to color size ect. in essance a person should be able to guess that (as it can hold true to any species) but maybe its a child who doesnt really know plus the new people who dont know much about genetics or maybe they just want to see some chickens from someone whos done that cross before to see if they really want to cross the 2 breeds in question.

mine were about d'uccle colors (self blue x mille...some of the colors looked nice while some were just ugly) and on d'uccle x silkie mixes but since there is to much of a difference and they dont look like what i was hoping for that cross is out...again off topic of what this thread is about...

my d'uccle has wattles...how many generations would it take to breed that out and what should i look for in a good mate for him (d'uccles are not supposed to have wattles)
