Fowl pox or peck wound?

Just finished tending to the little one. It appears she may have knocked off another little bump today, looks like only 2 left on top of her eyelid. The bottom of her eyelid looks more swollen this afternoon. Where the swelling is at the bottom, on the inside of her eyelid is very white. Not sure if it’s irrritation from the bump or puss. I tried to massage the area after doing compresses was was unsuccessful on getting anything out. Im really not sure what to do for the swelling at this point. She started day 4 of amoxicillin tonight. If it’s an infection idk if it’s getting better or not. If it’s fowl pox I don’t understand why her bottom eyelid seems to be swelling more.

Im at a loss 😔. I plan to keep doing what I’m doing and hopefully things will improve. Attached are pics from tonight.

Do you have terramycin eye antibiotic ointment? This may be a secondary infection and while the amoxy will attack it from within her system, the terramycin can have an effect from the surface. Is there a white film over her iris? That might mean her sight is damaged.

I do have terramycin. I started using that but switched to neosporin early on. I started back using the terramycin tonight. She does not have a film over her eye, her eye itself is normal. She keeps her eye open as well unless I’m messing with her eye.

Terramycin is a better antibiotic for this application than Neosporin. If this is infection causing this inflammation ans swelling, terramycin in tandem with the amoxy have a better chance of overcoming the bacteria. Use the terramycin twice a day.

Thank I started using it tonight when I saw the swelling thinking it might work better. I stopped using it when I started the ammoxy trying to conserve it since Neosporin is cheaper. I’ll keep using it and go ahead and order another tube of terramycin to have on hand since these tubes are not very big.

Terramycin is hugely expensive for the teensy amount they give you. It's more like the size of a sample tube of something. But it's meant to go directly on the eye, not the surrounding tissue. So Neosporin could be used on the swollen tissue under the eye.

Yes it is. That’s why I was trying to conserve it by switching. I also have vetercyin eye gel. I haven’t used it. Not sure if it’s worth using in conjunction with the terramycin. I’ve just been flushing it with eye wash, doing warm compresses and packing it.

Vetericyn products are not antibiotics, but for treating wounds. The Terramycin eye ointment is good for certain bacteria. The plain Neosporin, while not necessarily for eyes, covers more bacteria. It is sterile in an unopened tube, and while Neosporin Ophthalmic ointment or drops would be best, the prescription OTC Neo or Triple antibiotic ointment is about 30 times cheaper. I have used it on my chickens, and not had any issues. For people or myself personally, I would use prescription Neo or whatever my doctor prescribed.

This morning she had a lot of stuff in the corner of her eye again. I rinsed it out and used a qtip to get it all out. I pulled her eyelid back and applied the terramycin inside the eyelid and used the Neosporin for everything outside of the eye.

As far as prescription eye drops etc I do not have any. All I have is the Neosporin and the terramycin. If any one has any suggestions on eye drops that I can order that would be better I can definitely look into ordering.

Also one other question. She’s been separated for a while now in her on little cage amongst everyone due to them picking at her eye. We are suppose to have cold weather (for here) for a couple nights. It’s going to drop in the mid 20s which I know isn’t that cold for them. Will she do ok being isolated or would it be better to put her on the roost at night for those cold nights and just get her back down before first light. I don’t have a traditional coop more of a open air coop so no one is actually indoors.
