Fox attack! 12 chickens dead and abandoned.

So sorry for your losses :hugsthey were beautiful chickens. This is one of those “I’m so sorry you can’t have a gun moments”, though youre probably far better off without them 99% of the time. Are the foxes native, or introduced? Can you legally trap them or call an extermination/pest control company to deal with them? Better yet do dingoes eat foxes and could you get some? I’m not for wontonly killing wildlife, but I am extremely pro protecting your livestock with any means necessary! :hugs Can you beef up your coop defenses?

the only canine that can climb i have been told is the gray fox.

Tell that to our border collies... they can and will climb trees to get at raccoons, I’m usually so dumbfounded by it I forget to record but I’ll try to remember next time. Granted they can only get about 10-15 feet up most fir trees (no lower branches) but they have been known to get 20+ feet up fruit trees and maples!

I can beef up coop protection as a matter of fact that’s what Dad wants to do this weekend

Do red foxes climb wire?

I don’t know, I only have Raccoons, mink, and aerial predators to worry about. The mink scare me the most with my meat bird tractor design, but I’m not too close to their preferred habitat. I just knocked on a ton of wood, having typed that out! I need to get a terrier to sleep with my birdies or something...

Ohhhhh I don’t think your aloud taxidermy in Australia. I’m pretty sure they are protected
Pity... electric fencing? A couple strands of hot wire around the outside of the coop would deter climbers. If they have a paw on the ground and touch the wire- zap! Suddenly your chickens look way less tasty. A non-lethal solution?
