she's actually pretty amazing...she was born three weeks after I was diagnosed with leukemia...asked God to let me live long enough for her to remember me....she's 20... God owes me nothing...I'm in over time.

I'm glad she had a Daddy to grew up with! Sounds like you two put in a lot of time together.

My day:

-13 here today and windy!! I moved my young and favorite girls into my basement yesterday. It's warm and toasty down there because the furnace is running non-stop.

I also caved and bought a farm innovators heated water bowl. There was a small one and a large one for the same price, so I bought the bigger one. Probably a mistake, since it's HUGE! Didn't realize how big until I saw it next to the chickens! Lol.

Had a cockerel get his butt kicked today by another cockerel. He was covered in blood and all the chickens started pecking at him, even the females. Cleaned him up and put him in the basement for now too, so the wound doesn't get frostbite. And besides taking care of the kids, I haven't had a minute to myself till now!

Ruby, I also have a RIR just decide to go broody. Looking on the bright side, she is keeping the eggs warm so they don't crack, split and get ruined. I've just been giving her extra feed & water.

Really?! Well good luck to her!! Yeah, I definitely think she's broody! But she's a nice broody. She lets me look under her. I moved her to the basement last night. I have a big area (like a small room) set up for chickens. It's my quarantine area for when I buy and have adults birds shipped in. And she has made a nest in the corner and hunkered down on it and has not moved since yesterday. So, if I were to give her eggs, should I do it now? Or can I give her another day to prove her broodiness? Or just go ahead and give them to her and see what she does? This is my first time with a broody. Should I leave her down there for the whole 21 days? Can she stay alone or does she need company?

Last night the two "fridge eggs" hatched, including the only surviving egg from Peep, my other Orloff. So glad I put that one separate in a basket so I can band her!

Total of 9 out now! (This is so much more fun than shipped eggs.). Only have one I'm waiting on and I'm about to check and pull the 3 quitters I had left in and do an eggtopsy.

Friday, is this your first batch of local eggs?? I agree, completely!! It is so much more fun then shipped! They actually all hatch!! And most of them usually pop out on their own. It's a different world! I'm not wanting to do shipped eggs anymore! Lol

That's they way my grandpa felt. He didn't have leukemia, but he ran the landing craft in the south Pacific during WWII, he would have been 94 a couple days ago this year, but we lost him two years ago. Anyways, he made many many trips and always said he was living on borrowed time. I'm glad to hear that your girl's got you around.

We've been blessed with a few broody hens. In my experience, I can tell you to be prepared for the unexpected. We had one quit-totally- after the eggs were 17 days old. Had one eating the eggs, but later learned that she knows which ones are good & which ones are not. Had one sitting on the nest and an egg exploded under her. It was in the last week, so the gunk got all over the other eggs, and although I wiped them off, none made it.

The room sounds like a plan. Some broodies are so devoted that I have had to remove her from the nest during feed time. She will poop (GIANT), drink, eat quickly and hurry back to the nest. Broodies are an absolute beautiful thing in nature to watch. Maybe I am a protective farmer, but I do isolate mine. I have a broody box. Make sure she is eating and drinking. Some will drain all their energy & it can hurt/ kill her.

Not letting my RIR hatch out any. Just happy that she is keeping them from freezing with the freezing temps. Good luck with yours. Keep us posted.
