French Marans and Peachicks

Ruth those red finger nail,would be a treat for the peachicks. I have hand fed them egg yolk. They just dont know where the food ends and the fingers begin.

Yes, my inch-long red nails, which I think I've had since I was 13, are a real asset in getting baby chicks, ducks, peachicks to begin eating. I can peck at food on ground and they will come running to see and start pecking. I can scoop up food with the underneath and get them to eat out of my nail. And yes, those peachicks can bite. I started out hand feeding them and I too feed all the babies scrambled egg or boiled egg chopped up. But they quickly turned into little shark feeding frenzy demons. They were taking my finger tips off and grabbing my nails and pulling with all their might. I stopped hand feeding. But my logic was that I did want to handle them so they would be tamer and calmer when grown in case I do have to catch them and treat them or medicate them. My husband was laughing at me one night talking about how bad they bite and how it hurts. I told him "go ahead - put your hand in there with some food in it" - he wouldn't.

I sell peachicks when they are 10 weeks or older. Able to sex then,and make sure they are eating. Some newbe may not know how to get them eating. Guess it may be easy if I paint my nails red.

When I hatch chicks I have them eating wet crumbles off brooder floor even before the chick dries off or can lift its head and walk on its own. It knows how to eat the wet crumbles especially if a long red nail pecks at it.

I see by your pics. you have no trouble starting peachicks. I sell peachicks to full grown breeders. Ship them when not to hot.

Well looks like my Opal is a male. It and the one Deerman said was a Black Shoulder are the two biggest and they are also the two that have always put their tails up and fanned. Today when I let them out of the hutch the Opal not only fanned, it grabbed another one by the back of the neck, climbed on, and tried to do "it". Not sure at what age they actually start doing "it" but this one isn't wasting any time. It's amazing how much more active and how alive they are once they have room to run and jump and fly around.

All peafowl fan,or display. peacocks ,peahens, and peachicks. Not sure your Opal is a male. When it is older and a pic.of its back will be able to tell.
Sorry Ruth, but the fanning no help on sexing.
Peafowl should be 2yr. to breed. Some peahen will lay their first year,but not many.

Your Blackshoulder is getting darker reason I think he is a male.

So Ruth, you scored Mr.Jesse's chicks and the peachicks the same week? With that kind of luck you should have played the lottery.
I am on the waiting list for Mr.Jesse, I know he is having surgery soon so I will get them when he has them again.

Marans and Peachicks are growing by leaps and bounds - all now 2 1/2 months. Here's some recent pics.

The peachicks are getting beautiful coloring and I'm letting them stay out now - at least in coop and run area.

The other night I couldn't find 3 of them - should have looked up - they were in top rafters with the chickens.
