Sounds like you definitely stand a good chance at some broody girls...lol
Yes. I will be thinking about how to build bigger to rig thing's up so they can start doing the hatching for me next year. Then I might be able to sell my 2 incubator's?

I want to see that mix. I'm green..I want some dorkings.I also have a breeding group of pure Silver Grey Dorking chick's that I bought that are now 6 week's old. They are a broody breed too, so I'm really going to have fun next year.I plan to hatch some of those out as pure, and also mix them with my Naked Neck's too for 5 toed Naked Neck's. I have one already here that is a mix, and I like it.
You should keep at least one incubator in case you lose a broody or she gets tired of sitting. I gave my hatch to a broody. She had hatched 2x this year already and I didnt want her to sit too long. Win win, she got chicks and I didn't have to raise them. Absolutely build biggerYes. Can't claim to be an expert but 3 of mine started together at around nine months, one was about 18 months and has been the most consistent, one went broody before a year, raised chicks and hasn't been broody since. I have an easter egger that took over a hatch from a wandering mom, and raised two chicks but has never shown any interest in sitting on eggs.Speaking of broodiness...about what age do you start to see signs of that, is there an average age?
My flock was hatched 4 years ago and it appears one of them has decided this year to go broody. It surprises me, I would have guessed she would show that tendency earlier than now. She's a Cream Legbar if that makes any difference.
I've only had 1 determined broody and that was several years ago so can't remember when that gal started up.
So basically, any age?
(My, what sparkly teeth you have)
You have surprised me!And you thought that when I said that I was going to take a break from the hatching that there would be no way that I would wait this long to do more. I was searching for the SGD's, and was lucky to find someone near me that had some for sale.
I've only had 1 Nn go broody and when she got chicks she changed her mind in a hurryBig uhoh here. Lol. I ordered two nn pullets and 7 at silkies. I already have an older langshan that goes broody every six weeks, 2 cuckoo marans that go broody 2 to 3 times a year, a 3 yr old orpington that's only been broody once and several of those girls' daughters that are starting to show interest in chicks. I think my last batch of 6 (4 wk old) chicks is 4 cockrell & 2 pullets. I'm going to have to have a new coop and pen for the boys...can't wait to explain that to my spouse.![]()
now my SGD is being the mama instead and she never sat on eggs. I had several go broody at a year and 1 broody at a little older than 2. I think any age.Speaking of broodiness...about what age do you start to see signs of that, is there an average age?

Hi Rene, thanks for stopping by! I should have some Nn babies to share in a few weeks, got some eggs in my incubator. They really are adorable as chicks and pretty much all have been very laid back; my husband didn't like them at first but he has come around. Thank you for the well wishes for the heat issueI will have to sneak one in...because I know Dale doesn't care for their looks...but I'm loving the sound of their personalities more and more! I'm going to need a bigger coop...![]()
