Fugly Farm

Are you going to raise them, or do you have a broody hen?
I have a broody but she has only been so for a couple of days and I don’t think she’ll accept them. I’m going to take her eggs tonight and put her on the roost. It’s still chilly at night so I think she’ll break fairly quickly.

😔We lost a chick last night. It wandered out from under the brooder plate and died in the cold
I would at least try the broody hen with the chicks. There is a chance she'll take the chicks on.

I may try tonight and see what happens, but I’m concerned she will kill them. She wasn’t the least bit interested this morning.

I'm sorry.
My old broody takes chicks for day one. She will look at chicks and go broody. She gets that glazed look, and she will take them even when she has chicks of her own. I have another that has to sit a few days first.
I think it won't hurt to try.

If you try again IM put the chicks under her bum, don't show her the chicks at all if possible. Mums ime don't like having their chicks in front of them. I think part of this is because they know how quickly chicks chill and getting a day old chick from in front to under the bum without harming it is difficult if the hen is sitting on a bed of straw for example. I've had a few hens with chicks quite severly peck a chick that has "escaped". As soon as I tucked the chick back under the hens rear end peace was restored.

I think another one is going to die. We’ve showed them the food and water several times, but all they want to be cuddled. When I leave and close the door they just stand at the wire and cry. This has been a horrible experience thus far.

Can you take them inside? My heart is hurting for the littles. I hate raising chicks without mama hens.
