This butchering experience was pretty smooth. Igor cut off the head, the scalding water was ready and I learned that having running water to get the down and small feathers off your gloves or hands is helpful. Igor had better luck finding the crop today but since we butcher at first light they're usually empty. Cooking the neck and giblets for the pups, the carcass will rest until tomorrow.

Nice sized bird! Do you know how much it weighs?

IM, what's Poultry Cell? And bsfl?
BSFL is black soldier fly larva. I bought a large box full that's dehydrated.

Poultry Cell is just liquid vitamins to put in feed or water, made by Rooster Booster. It's in the first water my chicks get and they get it once a week on Sundays from then on. My older birds get the same treatment.

Thanks! Not yet, been busy getting ready for the week so will weigh it tomorrow before we put in the freezer. I'll post it though.

Thanks for cluing me in on the abbreviations :)

@igorsMistress I turned the 3 silkies loose in with the main flock today, and then had to sit out there and watch to see how thing's would go. I still have the NN cockerel penned up separately. So, I might also have some NN/silkie mixes coming up with that black silkie boy over the NN hens. Apparently the girl chick's from that will be the one's having the black skin, but not the boy's. I won't keep any boy's, just the girl's and then breed those back to the silkies.

I thought you couldn't breed silkies to full size chickens?

Well, I can't find any showgirl silkies, so I'll have to try to make my own. It will be a long term project, and I will have to keep breeding the female chicks with the black skinned naked necks back to the regular silkies until they look right.
