It is HOT. Daytime temps are 110+ on most days and one of the barred rocks was in a little distress last night. I could see her holding her wings out and she was making some noise. Today I need to water so they’ll have lots of cool mud and I hope they get the hang of the ice pools soon.

I hope they figure it out too. Those temps are brutal. When it's really hot I freeze corn in water, using a silicon baby food freezer tray. Gives the girls a nice treat, keeps them occupied and helps cool them down all at the same time. I freeze them, take them out and store them in a gallon freezer bag, that way you can stockpile with only one mold.

Hope your flock will make it past this brutal summer heat ok. I'm ready for fall myself!

I do this with also, usually with whatever I find in the crisper that needs using. I like that mold!

Lost one of the barred rocks to heat. I knew that was coming, but still a sad day. We are hitting 117 and 118 tomorrow and Thursday respectively. Hoping mud puddles, ice blocks and electrolytes will be enough. Poor chickens are roosting with their wings out and panting 😔 I made lots of mud for them this morning and opened up the garden for them for additional shade.

So sorry about the heat and loss of one of your flock IM. Hope the rest can hang on until cooler weather comes back. :hugs

I’m ready for fall too.
Here in the UK we've had what for us can only be described as a lovely spring and summer. Unfortunately such lovely summers cause havoc for farming and we will no doubt see the consequences of this in food price rises in the autumn.
