Full house is getting smelly!

My husband and I are both animal lovers, and have found it hard to turn down strays. Right now we have 3 dogs (one mutt, one rescued pitbull, and one boston terrier), 2 cats (1 russian blue, 1 mystery breed) and 1 chinchilla. We love our “kids”, but with such a full house, accidents are bound to happen. We’d love to add to our menagerie, but don’t want our house to end up smelling like a toxic dump. Does anyone have any recommendations for cleaning up these accidents and keeping our house odor-free? I’ve seen this sprayat Petsmart before, and my vet sells this pet odor eliminator at his office. Has anyone tried either of these, or any other miracle product? Do they really get rid of the odor/stain?

I love love love the carpet cleaner nature's miracle for cleaning up urine stains (works great on cat pee smell.) You can buy it at most pet stores, comes in white bottle with a red top.

My solution is dogs outside, cats that don't use the box outside, and no caged animals inside. Then clean up and your good to go. Fish don't make a big mess either.

Dont get in over your head if your worried that with the critters now might get smelly, hold off. Take one in at a time and dont get another until there are no accidents, its much easier to constantly babysit one accident maker and get them outside in time to avoid accidents.

We use the Tidy Cat Litter System. WONDERFUL litter. We have 3 cats & you wouldn't even notice it. I have 2 systems (they recommend having 1 more system litterbox than you have cats, but our 3 only use 1, even tho I've switched locations on them so the one they've used would then be in the bathroom, so they'd get the hint how they can use 'both' litterboxes.......... but they like to use just he one

). But I clean poo from it daily, super easy clean up from the ceramic pellets.

& I rotate my litter tray every 2 days & I replace my litterpad after it being used 4 days. That's what works for me & my 3 cats.

I also use "Nature's Miracle - Just for Cats Stain & Oder Remover" & it works great on keeping the litter fully scent free....(there is a day or so I'm late on replacing the litterpad & the pee has dribbled onto the tray........ I always carry it outside to change out the tray just in case.

The litterpad is SUPER absorbent like a diaper for a child, but when slid of the tray & folded onto a garbage bag it can drip or dribble pee from it, so I do that outside.....then go burn the garbage from there.

Anyway I put the Nature's Miracle into a small air pumped plant spray bottle so I get an even mist without wasting spray, & spray the littertray while changing the litterpad outside & wipe it clean with a papertowel & it's scent free & clean of smell. I also lightly mist spray the litter box plastic & wipe it dry with a paper towel to keep it nice & smell free. I don't smell it at all, but I want to keep it 'cat nose' clean.

I bought my Gallon of Nature's Miracle for $24.19 at a local non chain pet store. Makes me wonder tho if a homemade solution can be made.... since it has a strong alcohol smell.???

**ETA: I know I've used alcohol on a cotton swab to remove ink, even permanent ink from surfaces, so it is a GREAT stain remover. Never used it as a oder remover tho.

This is why I don't allow animals in my home - Heck, I barely even let the kids inside during the day

I would use Lysol and wipe everything down as much as possible. If you have carpet then you need to keep that dusted with the pet odor stuff and vacuum all the time - carpet absorbs alot of odor. I would also put some (critters) outside to help cut down. Air it out as much as possible.

I use a weak vinegar solution for the urine odors instead of buying the expensive carpet cleaners that are "recommended" for my carpet cleaner I use a weak vinegar solution and it works like a charm ..there was a urine smell in my sons room the day we moved in so who knows how long it's been there. My dogs kept sneaking to his room to pee there so this spot grew and grew...I went to the local hardware store and rented a high power carpet cleaner just cause mine was not meant for heavy duty water extraction. I went over the spot about 4X with a V&W solution removing all traces of the water before starting the next application. i would get down on my hands and knees and smell the carpet, if i could smell it again it got another dose after 4X the smell was gone and the dogs have never returned to that spot and neither has the new puppy.

Nature's Miracle is good IF you know where the smell is coming from so for spot cleaning. Puppy peed on my bed and i used nature's miracle and the smell was gone but i knew where EXACTLY the spot was.

as for the dogs. dont bathe them to often, the more you bathe them the more their skin will release oils creating more smell. brush them often (daily) get rid of a lot of doggie smell that way and there is a powder that you can get to sprinkle on dogs..it's like a baby powder for dogs that is great too.

as for the cats, if you have 2 cats you should have 3 litter boxes and clean them daily, use a clumping cat litter not the clay stuff, you want to remove pee and poo daily,

IMO Fabreze just hides the smell in your furniture

wash the cushion covers if you can if not there is a foam that you can get from most major grocery stains that will clean fabrics. I keep plain sheets on my sofa for the stains from paws and kids feet and i just wash them weekly, when I know company is coming i just remove them and my sofa is stain free

wash curtains monthly or bi-monthly

if you can remove all carpeting this is just a haven for smell. Use area rugs that can be thrown out or be rolled up to exposed the back when there is a pee accident

keep animals out of bedrooms! this one is a biggie, we dont think about cause we are sleeping but bedrooms hold a lot of smell and are harder to clean

When I worked at the vet we sold a spray called "Nature's Miracle". It really works well. I think they sell it at Pet Co also. If you have carpet you have to "soak" it well enough to get down through the padding or it doesn't do much good. You might give this spray a try.
