Fun Fact of the Day:___!

How weird is it to think about that? It's like how light from distant stars takes billions of years to reach us, and we're actually looking into the past when we look at the night sky.

WOW,  That is weird but cool.  I watched a show last night talking about going deep into space and lots of amazing things that were there.  They would say how far away it was and what transmissions for our radios could be heard at that distance.  They would be hearing our past.  They went all the way out to the first broadcast that we made and beyond to were we didn't exist yet because our radio transmissions have not reached that area of the galaxy yet.  It is odd to think of our past transmitting through space.  What I wouldn't give to hear a few loved ones voices again. :)

All sorts of fun things start to happen when the distances and speeds involved get big enough.

There's a theory that all of time exists right now, but from different locations in space. There's always somewhere which is seeing our yesterday right now, and somewhere else which is seeing theirs. Which means that right now someone else is existing in our future, and someone in their future may be seeing our future as their yesterday.

The analogy was that spacetime was a loaf of bread, which could be sliced in many different ways to produce the definition of "now". :p

And yes, it is odd to think of our past as existing somewhere right now!

that is fun to think about! I little mind bending but fun!

The mind bending part is fun

The other day I was watching a documentary called "Everything and Nothing" (which was about the universe and particle physics) and once they started on about non-Euclidean geometry my brain just began to complain, lol. Non-Euclidean geometry is such a hoot.

Parallel lines can meet at a point.
Triangles can have angles adding up to more than 180 degrees. (A triangle can have, for instance, three 90 degree angles)
On earth you can move from facing one direction to facing another direction without ever having stopped facing south

We have a scientist here in Australia called "Dr Karl" he has an amazing mind. He is often on the radio taking calls.

One day, I rang him on the radio and asked; "If you were on a train traveling at the speed of light, and then turned on the light pointing forward on the train what would happen? Would the light shine forward onto the track or would it not be seen?"

His answer shocked me. Firstly he loosely compared it to sound, as we know how sound behaves, but then went on to speculate the the speed of light would be relative.

He thinks, if you were on the train, you would see the light shine forward, but if you were standing beside the train as it went past, you would not see a light shining forward.

That was one mind bending phone conversation hahahahaha

lol!! wow! That is just amazing to imagine but it makes sense to me in some weird way!

wow! I hated geometry, I understood the rules but for some reason I never seemed to put the right one down for my answers. It may not have helped that my teacher was an angry spitting man that a few yrs after I was in his class he picked up a desk and threw it at a kid... Maybe a geometry with more flexibility would go better with my brain lol or maybe a teacher that didn't turn bright red and spit all over might help more haha

(To Bens-Hens, I was a bit slow posting): I bet it would have been!

Gravity affects time. :p If you go from the 50th floor of a building to the ground floor, time slows down by a minute amount for you, because the gravitational field is stronger.

(In a black hole, where mass is infinite so the gravitational field is also infinite, time stops.)

That's unfortunate that you had a bad teacher. One wonders how some teachers can last so long in the system.

Thankfully I had a good one for physics. He would have lots of conversations with us about his pet topic of relativity, which, not even being in the syllabus, provided a good opportunity for us to listen to interesting things without actually being obligated to remember any of them. :p

Yeah, it happens. I passed the class at least. It taught me life is frustrating at times. oh well. lol

sounds like your physics class was a fun one!

Quote: Yeah, some stars it would take up to 8 years before we noticed anything.lol.
