This is a dunce moment for one of the chicks.
One of the other silkie chicks ended up pulling one of it's tail feathers off or something, but that wasn't it's fault... What IS it's fault is that the chick with the missing feather was more interested in the red spot on it's butt more than any of the other chicks, pecking at itself and squeaking in pain as it did, which caused it to peck harder to, I presume, try and get rid of the pain.
I took it out so it'd get distracted from the red spot on it's butt and now it is resting in my hand peeping cutely.
You should see my Silkie chicks when I put mealworms in... They go from innocent little babies to vicious predators!I have a story of my Buff Orp, who thought I was food.
I reached into the coop to give the feeder a shake and one of the BO leapt at me, beak wide open, engulfing my entire index finger. I pulled back and my finger was all red and i thought "oh crap, I must have hurt her throat."
It took me all day worrying and confused(because it didn't seem likely I could have done as much damage to her when considering the apparent quantity of blood on my finger) before I remembered that the night before I had thrown them several beets. I often called them my T-rex's because they are little vicious killers (of mice and frogs). I also once found a song birds wing in their run. Still a mystery.
there is something alittle scary about them. They are pretty good predators.
The harness is a rabbit harness, but was easily adjusted to fit onto my chickens. ^^ I do intend to make proper chicken harnesses one day though.I would really love to see ur silkie or any other of your birds on a harness. Did you make the harness urself? I used to take my cat for walks but I lost patience when he would decide to sunbathe 4blks from home. Could never get him moving again and would have to carry. My worry with a chicken would be the same as with the cat. passing dogs.![]()

Also today I went to take the Silkie hen for a walk using a harness and leash to get her used to it, but the rooster oh so "volunteered" by jumping at me when I tried to pick the hen up... I picked him up instead and he froze as I put the harness on and adjusted it. I then put him down and... He went into reverse mode, backing into my legs and glaring up at me as if saying "Get this thing off me!" I took him for a little walk around the yard before then releasing the poor bird from the harness. XD

This is Hobbles... during incubation I had a humidity drop and she became shell bound. She was being shrink wrapped and was dying. Fortunately her beak was out of the pip hole and she lastsd long enough for me to get to her. An hour and 45 minutes later after painstaking warm sponges and water later I was able to free her from the shell. Her leg was splayed and her toes drawn together so she could not stand... I fashioned a splint to spread her toes apart and hobbled her legs together for four days and now she's a happy healthy egg laying machine at my preachers house... she's such a cutie!
