I got to experience a lot of different things growing up but chickens weren't one of them until May 2021 when the kids got me my first 4 babies.
I wonder if it's always been a part of me just waiting to "bloom" cause I pegged Polish and Mango to be lil cockrels well before you could tell they were cockrels. And it looks that I have been right again about Joey and Gracie (now Grayson)!
Gracie was wishful thinking...luv the name but always feared lil cockrel and seems I'm right so Grayson it is!
Mango was the one that had everyone stumped for so long, though I just knew.
Behavior is how I've been able to tell thus far with all of em.
With Polish rehomed Mango has asserted himself much better pace for the pullets Milli and Vanilli. And has been a really great lil cockrel til we began construction on the new coop. I'm guessing the noise of the equipment irritated him so it wasn't long before he turned and began to attack me when I would enter the run. After the initial shock and upset, I came here to BYC and began reading, learning and working with him. Mango has more good days than bad and we seem to have established some good patterns as we have been working through this stage.
I have made sure the family knows not to go into the run...especially the grandchildren. I'll bring the chickens out in a more controlled environment rather than risk an incident.
Here's Mango from chick to rooster!

First picture was taken on New Years eve, the 2nd one was a week before Christmas. Branch is my little buddy and loves to come in and watch tv. I'm eagerly awaiting my pullets first eggs as after she lay's a few I'm tossing some of them in the incubator.

They do look similar! Such a cutie!
I'm workin on integrating the 7 week old satin silkies with my 9 month olds and oh it's hard to watch em get pecked. I try not to interfere but the least on pecking order is the worst on the babies!

Milli & Vanilli...ya might remember the duo from the 90s that got in trouble for lip singing on the awards. Well I have know idea why those names came to me when we got my Mother's Day gift of 4 chicks in May 2021...but it did and it fit - sorta- they looked just a like and never made a sound LOL!
Anyway Milli has grown to be quite the talker though she was definitely last to start laying! She's top on the pecking order and Mango and Vanilli steer clear of her at all costs! I guess what other's say is true bout a rooster having a favorite. Milli also could care less about treats or me at all for that matter LOL.

And for Vanilli...she has always been such a cutie! Always the first to come running for treats, little dramatic with her "face planting" in front of the coop at about 8 weeks old or so. I thought she was dead! Turns out I think she really was depressed at how Polish was on fire for anything and everything that walked (horomonal cockrel).
Once he was rehomed, Vanilli brightened right back up! And I never dreamed she would be the first to lay! Much less be Mango's girl! They are inseparable!
But as I look back through photos I see where they were all along!!! This photos is too precious how he laid his little neck all stretched out over top of her when they were in the brooder!
Now Vanilli isn't as quiet as she once was - broody took its toll on her and she's quite vocal now!
