I have beek kicking myself in the rear for still not having started planting. Then go outside and cut up a little more of the pile of branches from the fruit tree topping and storms and pruning while the flock is out with me and then go back in a couple hours and back on the couch.

But given the soggy April and now 2 nights with a frost warning just now, maybe it's good I didn't plant yet! All I had to do was move some planters and cover some fig plants in big pots.

However, as am planning to direct sow seed, will it be too late for hot chili peppers and tomatoes from seed in the Chesapeake Bay area?

I planted some tomato plants late in the season last year. Tomatoes grew, and never got ripe. If you are thinking of planting from seeds, your results may be similar to mine. Cant help you about chili peppers. :idunno
My suggestions on tomatoes,,,, get a few from nursery that are already started.

It is probably the same with the chili peppers. Most of the kinds I checked on are at least 100 to 120 days to maturity. Those numbers are considered to start counting from the day they are transplanted.

I will probably do pre started tomatoes, but since i know the pepper seeds are types not found started around here (Carolina Reaper, Bishops Crown and others gifted me over the holidays) perhaps will do in pots so can bring at least a few in if they aren't ready to harvest by late fall.
And will put some seed into cold dry storage for next year, as insurance, since there are very few seeds of each.

Won't be much longer.
