Gnats killing birds

Check these new ones well for mites.

Yes ma'am i had the same concern and i did that before leaving the store. Its pretty clearly overbreeding, and some picking from boredom. The three cots werent kept w any males and arent missing feathers like the A&M or buttons. Feathers on everyones head and neck and back. The cots do have some picking going on. Everyones vents are pretty clean tho no red or black spots either moving or not and feathers are good there by the vents.

Wow! I am so sorry for all your losses. :hugs But I sure do appreciate you posting and sharing what you learned. I also had no idea about this. I had to google them and sure enough we have them here and a whole of host of gnats (flies) that can be dangerous to my birds. I will be keeping my eyes out for them. Thanks again for sharing.

Congrats on the great find on craigs list and your new birds are lucky to have such a good new home:woot

Thanks again im really taken by the buttons and the silver, glad i got em outa there. thank you for the compliment i wish it was a better home and im working toward it.

This year things are really bad with the bugs. The gnats have blown up across southern LA and i have lost 42 birds. 41 quail and one black bantam frizzled cochin who i loved dearly.

As the quail started dying off i had just read about wood ash containing arsenic if from treated wood. I was convinced i had poisoned my birds and the quail were dying left and right, i lost 10 and 12 a day i had cleaned cages took away all baths gave fresh potting soil and sand iut hoping they could kick back and then i lost that dear little hen. When i lost her i took her to LSU for a necropsy the resulta came back today and "buffalo gnats" are responsible for the losses. Spray everything with premetherin. These blow up will last a few wks until the temps are 85 and above for more than 4 consecutive days
We are in an area where the buffalo gnats are really bad, one mile from wetlands and the Mississippi river. For the past 4 or 5 years I have been using cedar bedding to give my chickens, dogs and other animals an "island of sanity" outdoors. They quickly learn that if they get on the cedar the gnats don't bother them much.

The cedar hasn't bothered your birds any?

Well hi neighbor! Im sorry youve had to battle them too and im glad you found a solution that works for you! A friend has said shes put out fresh pine shavings as a short term protection.

Wow:eek: I hate your having such a hard time, Lets all go live with Phil :idunno All else fails use a powerful fan to blow them away . How close to Monroeville Alabama are you? I'll be there Monday morning picking up a tractor .

Thanks Uncle K! Its okay now tho really i got it under control. Actually just today i went on another spraying spree because while the bugs arent plentiful i still cant bring the little ones outside to play. Ive got a diameter of about 100 ft to three sides of the center of my coop system plus about 25 ft the last direction. Still gotta cut the neighbors place to treat over there. Gonna rain tumro tho of course so T will cut it on Sun and then ill be retreating everything and i think after that time ill be able to bring the kids to play outside. Still no more losses so i havent put up the fans but i have counted them and located extension cords so that i can if need be.

I looked it up-- about 4 1/2 hours ☹ too far for me to bring the trio of littles out but id be more! than! glad! to put u up for a night if u wanted to make the extra run!!

Wow, I have never heard of buffalo gnats and hope we never get them ! We have flies and gnats but not the same kind. I spray our horses almost every day when its warm weather. I wear head phones to keep them out of my ears. I could be wrong, but I think my neighbors cows attract the flys and gnats. Has anyone had buffalo gnats in FL ?
