Goat experts and opinionated people needed: ivermectin vs herbals

Those of you who recommend ivermectin, do you prefer the injectable, pour-on, or paste? (To be given orally)

This is how I do it.You can use this info how you wish.
Iam no expert by any means. I have raised Dairy goats for 14 years.
This is the info I give to new goat owners that buy goats from me to get them started.

There are three types of wormers
1. Avermectin Ivermectin such as Ivomec Dectomax,Cydectin,quest.Give it ORALLY even the injectable.Oral worming with these wormers are best due to the goats fast acting metabolism.
For lice you can inject 1cc Ivermectin1% subQ (under the skin)
dosage for 1% Ivermectin Orally is
up to 50 lbs 1cc
51-100 lbs 2cc
over100lbs 3cc

2. Benzimidazoles known as the white wormers,such as Valbazen,Safeguard/Panacur,Synanthic,Telmin,Benzelmin,Anthelcide.
DO NOT TREAT PREGNANT DOES WITH VALBAZEN It is known to cause abortions.

3. Imidazothiazole known as Tramisol,Levasol,Pyrantel,Morantel,( Pregnant does may abort with Tramisol)

Give Paste wormers at 3 times the goats weight.If the goat weights 100 lbs. then you dose for 300lbs.
The pour ons do not work well for goats due to their thin hides.Wears off too fast.

I use Ivomec at 1cc per 40 lbs. I inject but giving orally is fine too.

Another wormer to consider is Safeguard. The liquid form. Given at 1cc per 10 lbs.

I had a male goat that was coughing. He did have a temp too. I took him to the vet. We used Exceed, Nuflor and another one that started with a D (my mind is blank at the moment). He just wasn't getting better. I had 2 fecals done and they both came back clean. I was tired of doing antibiotic shots with no results and decided just to worm him. Well, it worked. He is barely coughing now and I just have one more shot of Ivomec that I want to do.

I did 3 days of Safeguard at 1cc per 10 lbs. I waited a couple day and did a shot of Ivomec at 1cc per 40lbs. A few days later I did 5 days of the 12.5% Dimethox. I have one more Ivomec shot that I'm doing 10 days after the first one.

My plan is to try the herbals but sometimes you need to just get them wormed with stuff that will get the job done fast.

The dosage that I use actually comes from 2 different vets in my area. I don't know what your vets would say in your area.

The problem in goats with using the injectible ivomectin orally is that the worms die off very quickly, and if the goat has a heavy load of worms attached to the lining of their digestive tract, they let go an leave little holes that bleed. A lot of little holes bleeding all at once can quickly become a dead goat. So use caution with worming this way. Injections are very easy to give once someone shows you how, and you can practice on an orange....

miss_thenorth, if I were you I would just continue as you normally do until you get your 'scope and start doing fecals. Actually, that is what I ended up doing....using the familiar chemical dewormer (ivermectin paste was what my horse got, mostly) and injecting it, as I have given hundreds of injections (probably thousands) to horses over the years, so that was a comfortable concept for me.

You will likely find it as fascinating a project as I do! It was so interesting to me years ago, to find out that one particular pasture carried a higher worm load withing the same property. I just wormed those mares one extra time, problem solved.

the ivermectin here comes in three strengths (horse, pig and cow I think) be sure you use the right dose, we use a half a gain of rice oral 1.63% (horse) for domestic female rats (approx .5 lbs) and a 'whole grain for males (over 1 lb). We use it one a week for three weeks. (this is just to remind ppl to check the strength of their oral IVm)

We have a few mostly black purebred nubians that were getting a little pale in the eyelids, and their coats weren't quite where I wanted them to be.. Nothing dangerous...just needed to be dealt with. I waited until after we'd had a few good hard frosts (to help prevent re-infection is my thinking

) and wormed with Dectomax 1% injectable dosed orally at about 1ml/30lbs.

Within about 48 hours, their eyelids were pinker than I've probably ever seen them. The last worming they got was with Ivomec injectable dosed orally at the same rate (quite some time ago) and it helped...but it wasn't as good as Dectomax seemed to be. My thinking in buying Dectomax was that it's doramectin, not ivermectin, and that maybe it would be juuuuust different enough to be more effective than ivermectin.

While I certainly can't say if that's what happened or not, I can say that we were quite pleased.
