Hey how do you guys check your geese for mites? I was cuddling my gander when I caught a red mite biting my ankle. I haven’t seen any sign of mites but when I tried to check my boy for mites I couldn’t for the life of me find a place where I could see his skin. Same with my girl. Their down is just too thick.
My ducks and chickens were easier to check and I don’t see anything but I’m going to treat everybody anyway. I was just wondering how you guys do this in case there is a hack. Even their armpits are too fluffy

There isn’t an easy way to see the skin through thick goose down, it’s better to use the white paper test to see if there’s a mite infestation in their coop because it’s useless trying to check a goose itself.

It’s best to treat geese with a little ivermectin rather than dusting them as some do with chickens, there's no easy way to dust a large bird and the down makes it futile anyway. Ivermectin will make the body toxic to mites.

Ivermectin horse paste dosage is 0.05 ml per pound.

Ok that’s reassuring it’s not just me, thank you. Rest assured Ivermectin was my first port of call. I’m so done with snake oil remedies that don’t actually work and leave my animals miserable for longer.
