So cool you have something from your great grandma. I've read that just about any left over fabric was used for batting, especially if the quilt maker didn't have the funds to buy new materials. Original idea was to use up bits and pieces anyway. Hard to tell what it is... cotton something. Sacking, old blankets, any old material was used. Bits and pieces!
There is a beautiful old storage chest type piece of furniture up at the farm. It is loaded with all sorts of doilies,blankets, edged towels and stuff, all crocheted by my great grandmother. No idea what we are supposed to do with it all. Some of the pieces are really neat... ruffles and flowers, all done with cotton thread (or string?). She used some tiny hooks! My grandma said her mother barely even had to look while she crocheted. Like a machine!
